- W28804529 abstract "This chapter focuses on six techniques that have been employed to describe the microstructure of cement paste: helium inflow, gas adsorption, ac impedance spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, mercury porosimetry, and solvent replacement. The results of the helium inflow experiments can be used to examine the validity of pore structure models for cement paste. Gas adsorption techniques have been used extensively in cement science to characterize the pore structure of hardened cement systems. Methods based on the interaction of water vapor or other adsorbates with the solid surfaces of microporous adsorbents such as hydrated Portland cement are briefly described in the chapter. Alternating current impedance spectroscopy (ACIS) is widely used in both fundamental and applied electrochemical studies. This technique involves the application of a small amplitude sinusoidal voltage or current signal to a system; a response current or potential signal is generated and recorded. Mercury-intrusion porosimetry appears to be the most commonly used pore structure characterization technique. The technique is based on the principle that non-wetting liquids such as mercury can only intrude a porous material if a certain pressure is applied on the system." @default.
