- W2885103673 abstract "These families have several features in common. The number of incisors is reduced to two upper pairs and one lower pair in lagomorphs, i.e., rabbits, hares, and pikas, and one upper and one lower pair in rodents. There are no canines, and the incisors are separated from the cheek teeth by a diastema. The incisors are used for gnawing and always grow continuously. In lagomorphs and many rodents the cheek teeth also have continuous growth. Lagomorphs are grazing herbivores and the dentition varies little between species. In contrast, rodents may eat leaves, other plant parts, nuts, fruits, and animal material, including eggs, young birds and animals, worms, and carrion. Among rodents there are many specialists but also many omnivores. The dietary adaptability is facilitated by the versatility of the rodent dentition, which shows considerable morphological variation. For example, the incisors tend to be broad in herbivores but narrow and deep in carnivores, or slender and forcepslike in worm eaters. Molars are large, hypsodont or hypselodont, with elaborately folded patterns of lophs in herbivores, and small with pointed cusps in insectivores and carnivores. Some rodents have extremely specialized dentitions. Shrew rats from the Indo-Australasian archipelago, which feed on soft-bodied invertebrates such as worms and have long, slender incisors, and the number of molars may be reduced to two, one, or even zero per quadrant. Most mole rats use their incisors in digging burrows but, as well as specialized incisors, these animals usually show delayed eruption, and the silvery mole rat produces an apparently endless number of supernumerary teeth, which migrate forward into function and are resorbed anteriorly. Some rodents are monophyodont, whereas others are diphyodont to some extent." @default.
