- W2893751567 abstract "Complexity Theory is relatively young discipline which has provided very powerful tools to analyse Complex Adaptive Dynamic Systems. Agent Based Modelling is one such technique which is widely practiced. In this paper, we study, why or how this ABM is different from conventional modelling techniques. In particular, we would like to understand ABM performance for the context of modern battle scenarios and systems. For this analysis we chose battle/confrontation between Radar and an Attack aircraft as a cases study. One of the distinguishing feature of modern battle systems like Radar is their extensive configurability. Detailed configuration must be made even after purchase and deployment of a given system to suit to specific mission scenarios. This configuration is knowledge intensive activity, where knowledge about resources of own side, rival side, environment and general science and mathematics becomes very important. In this paper we exam how suitable configuration parameters can be selected for a radar based on its mission needs. Purpose of analysis is to determine the scan rate with which Radar must scan the space. More specifically, planner must evaluate what should be the rate at which Radar should scan across azimuth and elevation. Agent based model helps to pick a suitable trade-off between the extremes of slow scanning and speeding through long hops and thus leaving holes in between. Discrete time-based simulation model is one of the oldest and conventional type of modelling. It is chosen as reference to compare and contrast with ABM performance. We simulate scenarios which by varying different target characteristics like approaching radial velocity and initial positions in both DTM and ABM. By evaluation of these scenarios, optimal scan rate value is determined. While determining the optimal value of the scan rate, we also examine comparative merits and demerits of using causative phenomenon (like discrete event simulations) vs complex, emergent phenomenon (agent-based simulation)." @default.
