- W2899641625 abstract "Muscles convert energy derived from metabolic substrates into mechanical work. Efficiency quantifies the fraction of the energy consumed that appears as work. This review provides an overview of the relationship between muscle biochemistry and thermodynamics to illustrate the different definitions of efficiency and their values. It is argued that thermodynamic efficiency is the best measure of muscle efficiency and a comparison among muscles shows that overall efficiency of skeletal muscles varies between ~15% for mouse muscle to 35% for tortoise muscle. These values reflect the product of cross-bridge efficiency of 20%–50%, depending on species and fiber type, and mitochondrial efficiency of 75%–80%. Evidence is presented that the maximum possible cross-bridge efficiency (i.e., work/free energy change from ATP hydrolysis) is ~50% and that this can only be achieved at the cost of power output. Overall muscle efficiency is between 15% and 35%, with values for fast muscles in general being lower than those from slow muscles." @default.
