- W2903044678 abstract "The performing arts subculture presents unique challenges to artists. Relentless pressure to perform optimally, long and late nights, financial uncertainty, injuries, and career specific psychosocial stressors may contribute to psychological dysfunction. Performers are reluctant to seek help for various reasons including fear that their unique circumstances might not be respected. When they finally seek help, it is important that they are understood otherwise treatment will not be successful. This chapter presents the context in which problems might develop along with their idiosyncratic manifestation. It provides insight into the struggles and perils of the performing arts professions and discusses the nature of select issues. These include burnout, coping with physical injuries, disordered eating, performance anxiety, and perfectionism; multiple career-related issues included career trajectories and substance abuse. Management guidelines and recommendations are provided." @default.
