Tooth size discrepancy has an important role in the stability of results of final orthodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to determine and compare Bolton ratio in normal occlusion and different malocclusion groups of Iranian population. This descriptive-analytic study comprises 240 orthodontic patient casts (for every malocclusion group: class I, class II division 1, class II division 2, class III, 30 males and 30 females) which have fully erupted and complete permanent dentitions from first molar to first molar, and also 60 persons (30 male–30 female) with normal occlusion. The mesiodistal tooth sizes were measured using digital caliper two times with a 4-week interval. The average mesiodistal size of all teeth in the malocclusion group was significantly bigger than in the normal occlusion group. Although there was no relationship between anterior ratio and gender or malocclusion groups, but a significant relationship between total ratio in Class II division 1 and normal occlusion was seen. Furthermore, a significant difference between anterior and total ratios in the present study and original Bolton's values was found. In the normal occlusion group, the anterior and total ratios were bigger than those in Bolton's original study. Also, “class II division 1” showed the lowest values of Bolton ratio among the other normal occlusion and malocclusion groups. Therefore, the original Bolton's values should be used conservatively in Iranian population. L’indice de Bolton est utilisé comme méthode diagnostique de la dysharmonie dentodentaire. La dysharmonie dentodentaire joue un rôle important dans la stabilité finale du traitement orthodontique. Le but de cette étude était de déterminer et de comparer l’indice de Bolton dans les groupes ayant une occlusion normale et les groupes ayant différents types de malocclusion au sein de la population iranienne. Cette étude descriptive-analytique a pris en compte 240 modèles orthodontiques en plâtre de patients (30 hommes et 30 femmes pour chaque groupe de malocclusion : classe I, classe II division 1, classe II division 2, classe III) présentant une denture permanente complète et achevée de première molaire à première molaire, ainsi que 60 personnes (30 hommes et 30 femmes) ayant une occlusion normale. La dimension mésio-distale des dents a été mesurée à deux reprises à l’aide d’un pied à coulisse numérique à 4 semaines d’intervalle. La dimension mésio-distale moyenne de toutes les dents du groupe de malocclusion a été significativement plus grande que celle du groupe ayant une occlusion normale. Bien qu’il n’y ait pas de relation entre le rapport antérieur, le sexe ou les groupes de malocclusion, une relation significative entre le rapport global dans la classe II division 1 et dans l’occlusion normale a toutefois été observée. De plus, une différence significative a été constatée entre le rapport antérieur et le rapport global de la présente étude et les valeurs initiales de Bolton. Dans le groupe d’occlusion normale, le rapport antérieur et le rapport global sont supérieurs à ceux de l’étude initiale de Bolton. De plus, le groupe ayant une malocclusion de classe II division 1 a présenté les valeurs d’indice de Bolton les plus basses par rapport aux autres groupes ayant une occlusion normale et une malocclusion. Par conséquent, les valeurs initiales de Bolton devraient être utilisées avec prudence dans le cas de la population iranienne." @default.
