- W2925637275 abstract "Of all the medical books in history, Vesalius's Fabrica is arguably the most dramatic, through its somewhat bizarre and often macabre illustrations. It has also been considered one of the most important medical volumes written. In this chapter, I consider Vesalius's Fabrica from a semiotic perspective, to apprehend the meaning of this illustrated text within the context of a Renaissance ideology, approaching it as an argument for a new way of seeing anatomy – an argument that ultimately positioned the work as a key text in an emergent medical discourse. In particular, the chapter excavates Renaissance attitudes to death and criminality, to suggest how the Fabrica, through these and discourses of printing and art, was able to activate myths which assisted in its significance and popularity, and were to influence how the human body was to be understood for centuries to come." @default.
