- W3046639323 abstract "Self-esteem reflects a person's evaluation of his or her self-worth and consistent evidence has demonstrated the essential role of self-concept in increasing self-esteem among school-aged children. However, little is known about the neural bases of children's self-esteem and the underlying mechanisms of how self-concept enhances self-esteem in the healthy brain. In this investigation, we examined these issues in 77 primary school students (mean age = 10.17 years, standard deviation = 0.95) by assessing resting-state brain activity (i.e., fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations, fALFF) and connectivity (i.e., resting-state functional connectivity, RSFC). Whole-brain correlation analysis showed that higher levels of self-esteem were associated with increased fALFF in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) and decreased RSFC between the right dlPFC and the following four brain regions: right inferior temporal gyrus (ITG), left fusiform gyrus (FG), right postcentral gyrus (PoCG) and left precuneus (PCu). Mediation analysis indicated that self-concept mediated the effect of right dlPFC activity, right dlPFC–left FG connectivity, and right dlPFC–left PCu connectivity on self-esteem. Taken together, the current study provided new evidence for functional neural substrates of children's self-esteem, and further revealed a potential mechanism for increasing self-esteem in which resting-state brain activity and connectivity might affect self-esteem through self-concept." @default.
