- W3202042124 abstract "Environmental stresses are a detrimental factor that limits the growth and productivity of the plants. With rise in average global temperature, such stresses are further aggravated which is a major cause of concern for food security of expanding population. To survive under unfavorable conditions, plants produce several metabolites that abrogate the cellular damages and help them in their acclimatization. Exogenous application of various chemical agents has further facilitated the formation of such metabolites in plants. One such chemical agent is β-aminobutyric acid that is an isomer of other well-known chemical agents, i.e., γ-aminobutyric acid that is widely found in plants. Unlike its isomer, β-aminobutyric acid is not abundant in plants and was therefore previously considered as a xenobiotic. However, in recent times, it was proved that β-aminobutyric acid is naturally occurring in plants. Upon exogenous application, β-aminobutyric interacted with other stress hormones such as abscisic acid, salicylic acid, jasmonic acid, and ethylene, amplifying their signaling cascade and enhancing the formation of protective metabolites like osmolytes and antioxidants. In this chapter, we will mainly focus on the protective action of β-aminobutyric acid against diverse abiotic and biotic stress in plants. We will try to decipher the various mechanisms known so far that helped the plants to acclimatize under such unfavorable conditions in the presence of β-aminobutyric acid." @default.
