- W4206943977 abstract "The impact of pollutants on aquatic ecosystems is very complex and an assessment for controlling and reducing this impact is necessary. As aquatic primary producers, microalgae can be applied in ecotoxicity research as sensitive biological indicators of pollution. This type of study could contribute to regulating the entrance of emerging contaminants into the ecosystems. The use of whole-cell analysis demonstrates the clear advantage of being able to detect the complex reactions that occur in an intact metabolically active cell. Flow cytometry allows quantifying several biological parameters at the same time, in the same cell, avoiding the loss of information typical of bulk measurement analysis. This chapter summarizes the alterations detected at different cellular levels in microalgae exposed to emerging pollutants using several cytomic biomarkers (e.g., viability, reactive oxygen species levels, or membrane potentials)." @default.
