- W4308221381 abstract "Post-harvest losses (PHLs) are mainly caused due to microbial degradation, mechanical injury, and physiological deterioration and over ripening. Standard methods involve storing post-harvest produce in glass, plastic, paperboard, steel, aluminum, and wood. However, these materials do not address the key issues, such as microbial degradation, over ripening, and nonbiodegradability. Bionanocomposites have been hailed as the beginning of new era in the field of preservation of post-harvest innovation. Bionanocomposites are biodegradable polymer in which nanomaterials are incorporated that can increase mechanical strength and serve as barrier for microorganisms. Biopolymer with nanosilica particles has drawn a lot of attention because it improves shelf-life by limiting microbial contamination and increasing antioxidant activity, antimicrobial agents, and nutrients carriers in food preservation. It is greener and more sustainable environmental friendly than conventional plastics for food preservation. In this chapter, we will evaluate the application and recent advances of silica nanocomposites for preservation of post-harvest produce." @default.
