- W1000113532 abstract "This chapter discusses the Hudson Platform that consists of the erosional remnants of two adjacent cratonic basins located in the central part of the Canadian Shield, where it encompasses an area of approximately 970,000 square kilometers. About two thirds of this area of Phanerozoic rocks is covered by water of Hudson and James Bays. The Hudson Platform is subdivided by a northeast-trending positive area, the– Cape Henrietta Maria Arch, into two Phanerozoic sedimentary basins: (1) the Moose River Basin in the southeast and (2) the Hudson Bay Basin in the northwest. The Hudson Platform is separated from the Michigan and Allegheny Basins to the south by the Fraserdale Arch, from the Williston and Elk Point Basins to the southwest by the Severn Arch, and from the Foxe Basin to the north by the Bell Arch. Most of the Phanerozoic rock outcrops of the Hudson Bay Lowland are confined to the banks of rivers and along parts of the coastline. On Southampton, Mansel, and Coats Islands, outcrops are more numerous and occur along the shorelines, rivers, and interior upland areas." @default.
- W1000113764 abstract "In this paper, the novel hybrid ensemble learning paradigm integrating ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and least square support machine (LSSVM) is proposed to improve the accuracy of fishery landing forecasting. This hybrid is formulated specifically to address in modeling fishery landing, which has high nonlinear, non-stationary and seasonality time series which can hardly be properly modelled and accurately forecasted by traditional statistical models. In the hybrid model, EMD is used to decompose original data into a finite and often small number of sub-series. The each sub-series is modeled and forecasted by a LSSVM model. Finally the forecast of fishery landing is obtained by aggregating all forecasting results of sub-series. To assess the effectiveness and predictability of EMD-LSSVM, monthly fishery landing record data from East Johor of Peninsular Malaysia, have been used as a case study. The result shows that proposed model yield better forecasts than Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA), LSSVM and EMD-ARIMA models on several criteria.." @default.

- W1000114306 abstract "The impact of economic recessions on the incidence and treatment of cancer is unknown. We test the hypothesis that cancer incidence and treatment rates decrease during a recession, and that this relationship is more pronounced in cancers that present with mild, more easily ignored symptoms.Data on incidence and treatment for all cancers, and breast and pancreatic cancers specifically, from 1973-2008, were collected using Surveillance Epidemiology and End RESULTS (SEER). The data was adjusted for race, income, and education. Unemployment rate was used as the measure of economic recession. Data was log-transformed, and multivariate linear mixed regression was used.Adjusting for socioeconomic factors, the data revealed a significant inverse correlation between unemployment and rates of cancer incidence and treatment. Every 1% increase in unemployment was associated with a 2.2% (95% CI: 1.6-2.8%, p<0.001) reduction in cancer incidence, a 2.0% (1.2-2.8%, p=0.0157) decrease in surgery, and a 9.1% (8.2-10.0% p<0.001) decrease in radiation therapy (RT). Breast cancer incidence and treatment had a dramatic inverse relationship - 7.2% (6.3-8.1%), 6.7% (5.7-7.6%), and 19.0% (18.1-19.8%), respectively (p<0.001 for all). The decrease in incidence was only significant for in situ and localized tumors, but not in regional or distant breast cancer. Compared to breast cancer, pancreatic cancer had a weaker relationship between unemployment and incidence: 2.6% (1.8-3.3%, p=0.0005), surgery: 2.4% (2.0-2.7%, p<0.001), and RT: 1.9% (1.5-2.2% p<0.001).Increasing unemployment rates are associated with a decrease in the incidence and treatment of all cancers. This effect is exaggerated in breast cancer, where symptoms can more easily be ignored and where there are widely used screening tests relative to pancreatic cancer." @default.

- W1000116213 abstract "Jinxin oral liquid (JOL) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula modified from ma-xing-shi-gan-tang, an ancient formula widely used in the treatment of respiratory diseases such as bronchitis, pneumonia, and asthma. In our previous studies, JOL was shown to safely and effectively treat viral pneumonia, especially that involving respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). To investigate the mechanism of the effect of JOL in RSV infected mice, using a metabolomics approach based on ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with linear ion trap quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometry (UPLC/LTQ-Orbitrap–MS). BALB/c mice were divided into four groups, the control group (saline inoculation/no treatment), RSV group (RSV inoculation/saline treatment), RSV+JOL group (RSV inoculation/JOL treatment), and RSV+Riba group (RSV inoculation/ribavirin treatment). Plasma and lung tissue samples were collected 7 days after the inoculation/treatment protocols, and UPLC/LTQ-Orbitrap-MS method based on metabolomics was developed. Principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) were utilized to identify biomarkers potentially associated with the anti-RSV activity of JOL. JOL was associated with reduced inflammatory responses in RSV-infected lung tissue. The combination of PCA and OPLS-DA revealed deviations in 11 biomarkers in plasma, and 16 biomarkers in lung tissue induced by RSV that were corrected with JOL treatment. These biomarkers were primarily components of metabolic pathways involving glycerophosphocholines, sphingolipids, and glycerolipids. JOL was able to restore the abnormal levels of these biomarkers detected in the plasma and lung tissue of RSV-infected mice to approximately normal levels. This study suggested that JOL can treat RSV pneumonia effectively, partially by ameliorating the associated disturbances to lipid metabolism. The results provided insight into the anti-RSV mechanism of JOL, and also demonstrated that metabolomics is a valuable tool for investigating the efficacy of TCM treatment for RSV pneumonia, and the associated biomarkers involved." @default.

Important North American species include F. americana (white ash) and F. pennsylvanica (green ash). Typically, common ash trees have pinnately compound leaves (Fig. lb) arranged in alternately opposite pairs. Apetalous flowers are borne in axillary panicles, and each consists of a single ovary containing four ovules, of which only one usually develops into a seed. In this study, sea ice concentration data are assimilated into an operational ice forecast system based on a combined optimal interpolation and nudging scheme. The scheme produces a modeled sea ice concentration at every time step, based on the difference between observational and forecast data and on the ratio of observational error to modeled error. The impact and the effectiveness of data assimilation are investigated. Significant improvements to predictions of sea ice extent were obtained through the assimilation of ice concentration, and minor improvements through the adjustment of the upper ocean properties. The assimilation of ice thickness data did not significantly improve predictions. Forecast experiments show that the forecast accuracy is higher in summer, and that the errors on five-day forecasts occur mainly around the marginal ice zone." @default.
- W1000117647 abstract "We develop a coupled thermomechanical model, that includes mould taper, for the formation of air gaps in the vertical continuous casting of round billets. The system is very sensitive to the small width of the air gap. Mould tapers are used to mitigate the contraction of the solidified shell during cooling. We apply numerical and perturbation methods to show that a small mould taper significantly reduces the insulating effect of the air gap. The analysis is presented in a more transparent and less computationally expensive way than earlier, fully numerical models. We also consider a theoretical ideal taper, which eliminates the air gap altogether. The air gap is found to be quite robust; increasing the size of the taper does not constitute an equal reduction in the air gap size. Sample computations are carried out using parameters for the continuous casting of a pure metal (copper), although the framework can easily be extended to the continuous casting of alloys." @default.
- W100011798 abstract "Background. The association between weight loss and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) has been recognised from many years. Based on the evidence that nutritional status reflects metabolic disturbances in COPD, the relationship between body mass index (BMI), severity of airflow obstruction and CO diffusing capacity (DLCO), that is the functional hallmark of emphysema, is relevant to the management of COPD phenotypes. Methods. We reviewed 104 patients with COPD (82 males), aged 66±9 years (mean±SD). Height averaged 165±8 cm, weight 71±16 Kg, FEV1 50±18 (% of predicted), RV 169±49%, and DLCO 56±26%. Multiple linear regression was performed using BMI, FEV1 and RV, as explanatory variables for DLCO. Patients were also classified into four groups according to BMI ≤ 18.5 (low), > 18.5 and ≤ 25 (ideal), > 25 and ≤ 30 (overweight), > 30 (obese), and post-bronchodilator FEV1 < 50%. Using this categorisation, a two-factor analysis of variance, testing for interaction and main effects (BMI and FEV1) was performed as confirmatory analysis for the association between BMI (kg/m2), FEV1% and DLCO%. Results. FEV1 and BMI were significantly and independently associated to DLCO according to the equation: DLCO = -18.32 + 0.65·FEV1 + 1.59·BMI (R2 = 0.40, p<0.0001). The contribution of RV % to DLCO % was largely non-significant (p=0.16). A close relationship was found between BMI (kg/m2) and DLCO %, for all of the four BMI groups segregated by post-bronchodilator FEV1%, (p<.0001). No interaction was found between these two factors (p=0.30). Conclusion. Nutritional status as assessed by BMI contributes substantially to impairment of DLCO independently of the severity of airflow obstruction. This data confirms the association between emphysematous process and weight loss in advanced COPD, independent of the airflow obstruction severity." @default.

The two primary blood cell types can be separated based on differences in cellular density, with hematocrit (Hct) and leucocrit (Lct) referring to the percentages of packed cells occupied by RBCs and WBCs, respectively. Fish RBCs are ovoid, nucleated, and primarily function in gas transport because of their high cellular content of the oxygen-binding protein hemoglobin. The examination and rating of six samples taken in a systematic way as outlined by an ASTM procedure generates the nonmetallic inclusion rating for that heat. There are four ASTM bearing specifications that cover different grades of steel used in the bearing industry: ASTM Specification for High-Carbon-Chromium Ball and Roller-Bearing Steel (A 295-70); ASTM Specification for High Hardenability Bearing Steels (A 485-63); ASTM Specification for Carburizing Steels for Anti-Friction Bearings (A 534-65); and, ASTM Specification for Special Quality Ball and Roller Bearing Steel (A 535-65). This thesis presents the results of research effort conducted at different percentage of silica fume in concrete. The program investigated various characteristics of silica-fume concrete. It emphasized the effect of silica fume on workability level and its maintenance of fresh concrete; strength development and strength optimization and of hardened concrete. The experimental program comprised four levels of silica-fume contents (as partial replacement of cement by weight) at 0% (control mix), 5%, 10%, and 15% without superplasticizer. Concrete mixture been designed by respecting to American Concrete Institute (ACI) method. Concrete cube specimens were tested using compression machine for curing age of 3, 7, and 28 days. It was found that there was an optimal value of silica-fume content at which concrete strength improved significantly. All data had been analyzed using mean statistical method and regression method. Due to the slow development of pozzolanic effect, there was a drop in early strength up to seven days and late significant gains up to 28 days upon introducing silica fume to concrete. As per design requirement, the control mixture batch achieved the targeted 28-day compressive strength of 35 MPa. Result of modified concrete designation indicates that 10 and 15 percent addition of silica fume batches stated the 28-day average compressive strength of 38.28 MPa and 40.66 MPa, significantly higher compared to control mix. However, the 5% added silica fume concrete batch showed unobvious increase in compressive strength with 35.62 MPa" @default.

Mescaline, however, does not contain such a moiety despite its psychotomimetic activity, but it has been suggested by various authors that the side chain of the mescaline molecule might fold back towards the benzene ring to resemble the indole nucleus of LSD and thereby impart psychotomimetic activity. This chapter shows the behavioral effects of 2,5-dimethoxy-4 methylamphetamine (DOM), 2,5,dimethoxy-4-ethylamphetamine (DOET), and a series of six substituted phenyl aminobutanes, that are compared with the behavioral effects of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), mescaline and ( +)-amphetamine. DOM and DOET, in common with LSD, mescaline and (+)-amphetamine, cause an increase in spontaneous activity of rats.. DOM and DOET, in small doses, produce changes in rat open-field behavior comparable with those produced by LSD and mescaline. DOM does not enhance the initial learning of naive rats, but does prevent further learning in the same way that DOET does. LSD, mescaline and (+)-amphetamine do not have long-term effects on conditioning. DOM also had no effect on already learned conditioned avoidance." @default.

- W1000119667 abstract "This article presents the results of an analysis conducted to investigate the mechanism of embankment failure during the 2007 Chuetsu Oki earthquake (MJMA=6.6) that occurred in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. Data from field investigation were utilized to reconstruct a cross-section of the slope prior to the earthquake, and to estimate the in-situ properties of soil from the landslide mass. It was found that the failure plane formed in a saturated layer of sandy soil near a boundary with bedrock. Laboratory investigation, including a series of triaxial compression tests, was conducted to evaluate the liquefaction potential of the soil as well as to provide a basis for numerical analysis. Slope stability analysis performed on the basis of FEM procedure for the conditions existing before the earthquake yielded a safety factor of 1.18, indicating that the slope was amply stable prior to the earthquake. Results of undrained cyclic loading triaxial tests in conjunction with seismic response analysis of the embankment revealed that liquefaction of the saturated sand could have occurred during the earthquake. Furthermore, liquefaction analysis conducted on the basis of SPT-data provided more evidence supporting this hypothesis. Considering the obtained results, slope stability analysis was conducted for the conditions existing after the earthquake. The computed safety factor of 0.88 suggested that the stability of the slope was significantly undermined by the earthquake." @default.

The advantage of this programming model is that it allows you to have more complex data structures shared between the host and client, removing the requirement that the data objects be bitwise copyable (such that the data can be copied using simple memcpy function) between the host and the coprocessor. With virtual shared memory constructs, the data copied between the host and coprocessor can be arbitrarily complex, including structures containing pointers such as linked list and tree data structures. The data must be placed in the shared virtual space before the offload computation can be performed on the shared virtual memory objects. In this model, the underlying software implements and maintains virtual memory that is shared between the host and the coprocessor." @default.

Spacecraft power system management requires planning and scheduling, since electrical power is a scarce resource in space. The automation of power system management for future spacecraft has been recognized as an important R&D goal. Several automation technologies have emerged including the use of expert systems for automating human problem solving capabilities such as rule based expert system for fault diagnosis and load scheduling. It is questionable whether current generation expert system technology is applicable for power system management in space. The objective of the ADEPTS (ADvanced Electrical Power management Techniques for Space systems) is to study new techniques for power management automation. These techniques involve integrating current expert system technology with that of parallel and distributed computing, as well as a distributed, object-oriented approach to software design. Findings indicate that most laboratory values in elderly persons fall in the normal range. A significantly abnormal test result should raise the suspicion of underlying disease. A small percentage of patients show an abnormality on specific tests (ie, for glucose, calcium, serum lipids). Changes in a few test values are to be expected with aging: These include an increase in alkaline phosphatase, a decrease in serum phosphorus, a decrease in creatinine clearance without a concomitant rise in serum creatinine, and an increase in postprandial glucose level. Vitamin deficiencies and decrease in serum albumin are usually the result of chronic malnutrition rather than aging." @default.

Yeast endo-polygalacturonase is a constitutive, extracellular enzyme found in the culture liquid of strains of S. fragilis, but pectinesterase is not formed by the yeast. The enzyme catalyzes a random hydrolysis of polygalacturonic acid to a mixture of D-galacturonic and digalacturonic acids in an approximate molar ratio of 4:3, at which stage 70% of the bonds of the linear polymer are cleaved. There is an initial, linear rate of hydrolysis, during which approximately 25% of the glycosidic bonds are hydrolyzed, after which the reaction rate slows down. The enzyme assay is based on measuring the initial rate of increase in aldehyde groups by means of hypoiodite oxidation. During the first 3–5% hydrolysis, there is also a rapid lowering of the viscosity of a polygalacturonic acid solution. A more rapid assay procedure depends on measuring the rate of viscosity decrease." @default.

HLA mediated cellular immune responses are critical for controlling Mtb and recent studies have identified CD8+ T cells as important in controlling infection. Little is known about the minimal Mtb peptide ligands presented during an infection. The objective of this study is to biochemically purify ligands from the HLA of cells infected by Mtb to identify ligands distinct to infected cells. Methods 20 mg of soluble HLA-A ∗ 02:01 were harvested from Mtb infected THP-1 monocyte cells. Peptides were eluted from A ∗ 02:01, fractionated by HPLC, and comparatively analyzed using mass spectrometry (MS). Peptides unique to Mtb infected cells were identified, sequenced by tandem MS, and tested for immunogenicity in an IFNγ ELISOPT assay using PBMC from patients with acute and latent Mtb. Results Five novel Mtb derived ligands from five different Mtb open reading frames were presented by HLA-A ∗ 02:01 during infection. Patient T cells responded to four of the peptides. One peptide, LIL9 from a hypothetical Mtb protein, was dominant relative to the other four peptides, greater in both immunogenicity and in the number of Mtb patients with a response. A ligand from arsA, IMI10, only showed a measurable CD8 T-cell response in patients with latent tuberculosis infection. Conclusions We report the identification and characterization of 5 novel Mtb derived ligands, 4 of which were identified as CD8 T-cell epitopes. We further identify an epitope, who’s specific T-cells are only detectable in patients with latent tuberculosis infection. The reactive Mtb ligands identified not only represent novel epitopes, but also give us a glimpse of what Mtb proteins are processed and presented by class I HLA." @default.

In 2005-2006, 40 patients with end stage ILD were admitted with qualifications for lung transplantation (LT). From this group, 18 patients (7 women, 11 men) were referred for LT (active list), 22 patients (8 women, 14 men), who did not meet the ATS/ERS criteria for LT were excluded from this procedure (waiting list). All patients had echocardiography, spirometry, 6-min walking test (6MW), and gas exchange measurements. The following main echocariographic data that describe the LV function and morphology were taken into account: LVs, LVd, LVPWd, LVPWs, Ao, LA, ESV, EDV, and EF. We noted significant differences in LVPWd (P=0.01), ESV (P=0.01), and EDV (P=0.02), which presented lower values in patients on the active list compared with those on the waiting list. A positive correlation was found between 6MW and LVs (r=0.41), LA (r=0.45), ESV (r=0.62), and EDV (r=0.68). Correlations between spirometric, gas exchange, and left ventricle echocardiographic data were also observed. We conclude that patients on active list for lung transplantation present a decrease in the diameter and volume of the left ventricle. The objectives of the research project are the following: 1.The legislation (and in how far the rules and regulations introduced by the administration serve the implementation of a particular law) is usually not detailed enough with regard to public interest. 2.The administrative bodies, courts and local self-governments are thus capable of freely measuring public interest. 3.The decisions of the Hungarian constitutional court and their grounds are based on the principles of constitutional law, basic rights of citizens, weighing the priorities in each individual case. These decisions often refer to concrete legal norms containing public interest in a more detailed way. 4. The decisions of the European Court of Justice are also based on priorities, competitive principles, and interests. 5. The theory of law has not yet defined a general term on public interest. However, there is a need for defining principles facilitating the orientation in practice. Those are: the order (status quo) of society, the protection of social peace (social stability), safeguarding the living conditions for future generations etc. An important prerequisite for that is the predictability of legal certainty as well as procedural guarantees. Public interest groups could play a significant role in such court cases and their role in the case should be defined more clearly. The public interest as a basic principle should be drafted at the constitutional level." @default.

In an attempt to create a mouse model for Pompe disease, we isolated and characterized the gene encoding the mouse homologue of the human GAA. Twenty clones that extend from exon 2 to the poly(A) tail were isolated from a mouse liver cDNA library, but the remainder of the mRNA proved difficult to obtain by conventional cDNA library screening. Sequences spanning exons 1-2 were cloned by RACE from mouse liver RNA. The full-length liver GAA cDNA contains 3365 nucleotides with a coding region of 2859 nucleotides and a 394 base pair 3{prime}-nontranslated region. The deduced amino acid sequence of the mouse GAA shows 84% identity to the human GAA. Southern blot analysis demonstrated that the mouse GAA was encoded by a single copy gene. Then six bacteriophages containing DNA from the GAA gene were isolated by screening 10{sup 6} phage plaques of a mouse 129 genomic library using a mouse GAA cDNA as a probe. From one of these bacteriophages, an 11-kilobase EcoRI fragment containing exons 3 to 15 was subcloned and sequenced. Multiresolution analysis based on the wavelet theory permits the introduction of the concepts of signal filtering with different bandwidths or frequency resolutions. As both time and frequency analysis can be conducted by WT, the tree structure of WP analysis can be customized to match the critical bands of human hearing giving better spectral estimation for speech signal than other methods. Wavelet-based pitch estimation assumes that the glottis closures are correlated with the maxima in the adjacent scales of the WT. This approach ensures more accurate estimation of pitch period." @default.

- W100012660 abstract "The importance of lipid oxidation and antioxidants in biological systems and foodstuff has been widely recognized. Oxidative changes involving free radicals in membrane lipids are thought to have destructive cellular effects in vivo; whereas oxidative processes in foods result in flavor and nutritional quality deterioration that may also affect their safety and wholesomeness. Antioxidants protect cells and foods against oxidative stress. Many methods have been developed for evaluating the activity of antioxidants; these may be classified into two categories. The first category measures the ability of antioxidants in inhibiting oxidation reaction in a model system by monitoring the associated changes using physical, chemical or instrumental means. Radical scavenging assays include methods based on hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) or electron transfer (ET) mechanisms. Oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), total radical trapping antioxidant parameter (TRAP) and crocin bleaching assays are the major methods that measure HAT while Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and DPPH assays represent ET-based methods. An overview of relevant methods for evaluating antioxidant activity with emphasis on the chemistry, basic principles involved as well as advantages and disadvantages of each assay is provided." @default.
- W1000126601 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses peptide transport in bacteria. It describes the methods available for isolating and characterizing mutations in the genes encoding the various peptide transport systems, and the various approaches which have been used to monitor peptide transport in viuo and to analyze the kinetic constants and substrate specificities of these systems. The methodology described in this chapter is based on experience with the enteric bacteria Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium. However, most of the principles and techniques can be readily adapted for the study of other organisms. Because of the broad specificity of the peptide transport systems, many toxic peptides can enter the cells via these systems and provide a simple means of selecting and characterizing peptide transport-deficient mutants. The difficulty in studying peptide uptake by conventional techniques employing radiolabeled substrates has led to the development of techniques using fluorescent labels. The techniques addressed in the chapter provide a considerable amount of additional evidence about the fate of a transported peptide and its constituent amino acids. These various methods are certainly applicable to many organisms and now allow the transport of peptides to be studied as readily as that of amino acids, sugars, and other transported substrates." @default.
- W1000126612 abstract "This study examines the use of the Elicited Imitation Test (EIT) to measure second language learners’ underlying knowledge of restrictive relative clauses which will reflect their interlanguage representation of this property. It also investigates the acquisition of relative clauses by two groups of L2 English learners: L1 Malay and L1 Chinese speakers. This study employed two different testing instruments, i.e. the Elicited Imitation Test and the Grammaticality Judgement Test. The study follows the operational definitions established by Ellis (2004), for two constructs corresponding to implicit and explicit knowledge of the linguistic property being tested.Statistical analyses were carried out on the data obtained from the EIT and GJT. Results showed that learners were generally better at judging and imitating grammatical items in the both tests. Scores obtained were also comparable, indicating there was no significant difference between the mean scores obtained by the L1 Chinese and L1 Malay learners. However, it was discovered that when it came to ungrammatical items, learners were less determinate in their judgement and production. They were less proficient in their ability to imitate or judge and recast the ungrammatical items correctly. The results indicate that the L1 Malay and L1 Chinese learners of L2 English have interlanguage representations that differ from native speakers’ underlying representations of the said property. In addition, a correlation coefficient analysis was also conducted between the grammatical and ungrammatical items in both the EIT and GJT, to determine if a correlation exists. The results from the coefficient analysis showed no correlation between the ungrammatical items in both the tests. However, there was a correlation between the grammatical items in the EIT and GJT. This result suggests that the grammatical items in both the tests measure implicit knowledge. A suggestion is forwarded as to why the ungrammatical items in the tests did not correlate" @default.

This study investigated the demographic variables of school counselors, as well as three multicultural counseling competencies (multicultural terminology, multicultural knowledge, and multicultural awareness). A random sample of American School Counselor Association (ASCA) members received an online questionnaire via email, and a total of 381 professional school counselors participated in the study. The questionnaire combined the Multicultural Counseling and Training Survey-Revised (MCCTS-R), the School Counselor Self-Efficacy Scale (SCSE) and demographic questionnaires. To assess the relationships between demographic variables, three multicultural counseling competencies, and five dimensions of self-efficacy the researcher conducted a series of descriptive analyses and a two-step hierarchical multiple regression. The results of the study suggested that training experiences in a graduate program, school urbanicity, and age were related to the counselors’ perceived level of self-efficacy. Years of experience as a school counselor and race/ethnicity also were related to school counselors’ selfefficacy, after controlling multicultural counseling competency variables. The study suggests that multicultural knowledge and multicultural awareness were related significantly to school counselors’ self-efficacy when working with recent immigrant" @default.

Materials and methods. Experiments were performed on 65 cats under anesthesia with nembutal, 45 mg/kg intraperitoneally. A model of 5-minute clinical death from prolonged blood loss (50 mm Hg, a Wiggers hemobarostat) was employed. Cerebral circulation (hydrogen clearance), cardiac output, and its distribution (thermodilution) were recorded. The autonomic indices, such as the Kerdo, Algover, Robinson, and Hilebrant ones, were calculated. An index of regulatory system tension was estimated (analysis of cardiac rhythm variability). Results. There was a close, direct correlation of postresuscitative changes in cerebral circulation with cardiac output and its redistribution. The phasic pattern of cerebral circulatory recovery is reflected by the time course of changes in the neurovegetative indices. In hyperperfusion, the baseline levels of the Kerdo and Algover indices were associated with the low values of the Robinson and Hilebrant indices and tension index. Conclusion. The neurovegetative parameters are of the most informative value in inadequate brain perfusion (considerable increases in the Kerdo and Algover indices and a reduction in the Robinson index). In brain blood overperfusion that is beyond the adaptive ranges, these parameters (apart from the tension index) do not change as those in the surviving animals. The practical use of the indices requires additional experimental and clinical studies. Key words: postresuscitative period, cerebral circulation, cardiac output distribution, neurovegetative indices." @default.
- W10001295 abstract "The objective of the work studied here was to relate the structure of the conventional Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH), hydrotalcite and several transition metal doped hydrotalcites to their function once calcined into catalysts for use in the production of biodiesel.Attention was paid to the preparation of the LDHs. Three preparative methods were investigated, using sodium hydroxide and carbonate, using ammonia, and using urea as precipitating agents. The properties of the resultant LDHs and those of the mixed oxides produced on calcination were shown to be relatively independent of the synthesis method. The importance of ensuring that sodium salts were removed from the catalyst precursors before use, when using the first synthetic method, was shown. Evidence was provided which showed the significant effect on activity of the calcined catalysts when sodium was present. The importance of thorough washing of the LDH precipitates was clearly demonstrated. The calcination process was also studied and materials were subjected to two methods of calcination, “feedback-controlled” microwave heating and conventional heating in a furnace. This method of controlled microwave calcination may offer promise in the production of optimised mixed metal oxide and other catalysts. A copper-substituted hydrotalcite was subjected to calcination under feedback-controlled microwave heating, in which microwave power is continuously modulated to generate a defined sample temperature programme or constant sample temperature. The results showed that microwave calcination resulted in enhanced crystallinity of the resultant oxides and spinel phase formed at high temperature. In addition, an additional phase, Cu2MgO3, was detected following microwave calcination, which was not formed at any temperature (up to 1000 oC) under conventional heating. The concentrations and strengths of surface basic sites were significantly higher for materials calcined using microwaves than using conventional heating. Catalytic activities in the base-catalysed transesterification of tributyrin with methanol were also higher. Microwave calcination under feedback-control, while allowing control of material bulk temperature during calcination and preventing major 6 temperature excursions, may allow quite large but highly localised temperature variation, for instance as water is released during dehydroxylation, which are beneficial in developing surface defects and surface basicity. Other LDHs were studied incorporating the transition metals, cobalt, nickel and iron. All three showed some activity but basicity appeared to be enhanced by doping hydrotalcite with copper (II) and cobalt (II) particularly. Whether this is because of the presence of these ions on the catalyst surface and their behaviour as Lewis bases, or whether their presence leads to surface defect sites that show electron donating abilities, is not clear. The effect of microwave calcination on these other substituted LDHs seems to be variable and not always as pronounced as it is with the copper containing LDH. It seems likely that the extent to which microwaves are effective depends on their capacity to couple with the metals in the structures and the fact that this varies between metals perhaps explains why the different LDHs show different behaviours. Although not the most active material, perhaps the most interesting material formed upon calcination was the mixed oxides of Mg5.82Al1.12Fe0.88(CO3)(OH)16.4H2O, possessing both acidic and basic sites. All other LDHs studied possessed basic sites only. This could be very useful for the production of biodiesel from waste oil containing free fatty acids (FFAs) which require the presence of an acid catalyst for pre-esterification of these free acids." @default.

- W100013003 abstract "Why do we collect information in our eye care programmes? One important reason is that we use information to enhance our knowledge and then apply that knowledge to improve what we do. Information is the first step in a process of learning and improvement that enables us to make better decisions, improve the systems and places we work in, and enhance the quality of our own individual work. Information can help us improve; the trick is that we only collect the information we really need. We should neither overburden ourselves with more information than we can use, nor should we overload our colleagues with unnecessary requests for information when they should rather be delivering eye care to patients. We need the buy-in and cooperation of our colleagues if we want to collect accurate information; this means that everyone has to be motivated to make it work. Some time ago, when designing a reporting format for VISION 2020 programmes, a wise colleague advised me that, unless the person who was collecting information could see the benefit to them of doing this, it was just a waste of everyone’s time. So why do we all need to invest some of our precious time in collecting and providing good information? What are the benefits to you?" @default.
- W100013017 abstract "This article discusses an aspect of Chicago's history of residential segregation that is less well known than others - the flourishing of racial deed restrictions and restrictive covenants in the period from 1900 to 1953. Racially restrictive deed restrictions and covenants were legally enforceable provisions of deeds prohibiting owners from selling or leasing their residences to members of specific racial groups. Although one of the first covenant court cases resulted in a ruling against their constitutionality in California in 1892, in subsequent years, U.S. and state courts ruled that enforcement of covenants was constitutional.1 In 1917, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against municipally mandated racial zoning, a practice that had been adopted in cities across the South, including Baltimore, Richmond, Norfolk, and Louisville. The Court decided in Buchanan v. Warley that this type of state action setting aside sections of the city for the different races violated the Fourteenth Amendment's equal rights protection.2 However, in the North, the ruling spurred the use of covenants, because courts distinguished between the Fourteenth Amendment's applicability to publicly enacted zoning ordinances and the enforcement of privately established racial restrictive covenants.3 Almost a decade later, in 1926, the U.S. Supreme Court addressed the issue of covenants again in a Washington, D.C. case. The language in Corrigan v. Buckley led advocates to argue that the Court had effectively acknowledged the constitutionality of covenants. This resulted in state Supreme Courts in Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin and lower courts in Missouri and New York dismissing the issue of constitutionality of covenants. Cities across the United States, especially Chicago, increased their use of these discriminatory instruments. From 1926 to 1940, the U.S. Supreme Court heard no covenant case. In the 1940 Hansberry v. Lee decision (discussed below), the Court ruled in favor of Chicagoan Carl Hansberry but did not rule on the constitutionality of covenants. Finally, in the 1948 ruling in Shelley V. Kraemer, the Supreme Court ruled that courts could no longer enforce covenants.5 While covenants were only one of many strategies used by Northern whites to fight off racial integration in Northern cities - and were arguably less effective than other means such as violence and outright refusal to sell, rent, or provide real estate financing to African Americans-they are worthy of examination. In some cities, especially Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, and Milwaukee, covenants attained significant coverage and / or enforcement. In these cities, the dynamics of establishing, enforcing, and resisting covenants involved a complex set of interactions: 1) covenant creation by community organizations in enthusiastic, costly, and time-consuming campaigns; 2) rising awareness of covenants on the part of African Americans and others who refrained from even attempting to acquire housing in covenanted areas; 3) their challenge by African American and other constrained groups through the acquisition and occupancy of covenanted properties; 4) the mobilization of major institutions in the African American community, including life insurance companies and realtors, to assist in challenging covenants; 5) their enforcement by courts, depending on the discretion of individual judges; and 6) the rise of local, state, and national civil rights campaigns in the World War II era to resist the spread of covenants and call for their elimination. Studying covenants in the 20th Century city offers insight into a range of issues. These include the dynamics of conservative and liberal community organization; the role of race in the residential real estate industry; the institutionalization of racism and resistance to it in the U.S. judiciary at all levels; the growth of the civil rights movement in Northern cities in the 1930s and 1940s; and the personal experiences and responses of people subjected to state-supported discrimination. …" @default.

Health disparities among American women with disabilities have been largely ignored within the field of public health. These disparities lead to inadequate quality healthcare services provided to women with disabilities and consequently result in secondary complications and poor quality of health and life. In the last decade, the health disparities among women with disabilities and barriers to quality health care began to gain recognition and became one of the most prominent concerns in public health, as reflected by the federal initiatives, publications, and advocacy efforts. Objective: The aim of this study is to identify the barriers to quality health care provided to women with disabilities, to recognize federal initiatives and to advocate for initiatives to improve healthcare services provided to this population. In addition, the aim is to review the recommendations made by researchers and different federal and private agencies to eliminate the barriers and to improve the quality of health care provided to this population. Method: This review utilized data from the following sources that addressed women’s health: United Nations website, U.S. federal and public health agencies, selected articles, and advocates for women with disabilities. Results: Although Section 504 of The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) have protected the rights of disabled women to attain the health care that they need, the results reflected apparent health disparities between women with and without disabilities. Studies showed that disabled women are less likely to obtain the proper medical care due to access, financial and structural barriers. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) reinforced the preceding laws but it did not provide a complete mechanism to solve these issues and eliminate barriers nor to monitor and enforce states implementation of these laws. The unresolved barriers to quality health care for disabled women are placing them at higher risk of secondary complications due to a lack of proper preventative and medical care, which leads to poor quality of health and life. Conclusion: Federal agencies and advocate groups should collaborate to eliminate the barriers for providing quality healthcare for women with disabilities and to raise the awareness of the healthcare providers and the public about the barriers in order to improve the health of disabled women specifically, and the public health generally." @default.
- W1000131556 abstract "The membrane phospholipids of brain and retina are highly enriched in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), especially arachidonate and docosahexaenoate. Release of free arachidonic acid is the rate-limiting step in the cascade that results in the formation of the biologically active eicosanoids. Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) also leads to the synthesis of platelet-activating factor (PAF), an alkyl–ether phospholipid that is a potent mediator of inflammatory and immune processes. The chapter discusses the nature of the changes in membrane phospholipid-derived second messenger generation elicited by ischemia and convulsions; describes synaptosome-specific activation of phospholipases A2, A1 and C and the arachidonic acid cascade; and examines a hypothesis on how PAF might, in addition to its short-term effects, be involved in long-term changes in neuronal phenotype via activation of nuclear proto-oncogenes. These latter effects may link selective membrane phospholipid hydrolysis with synaptic remodeling and plasticity changes through the modulation of gene expression." @default.

The chapter begins by discussing several representative results that illustrate the major difficulties posed for simple conditioning models by sequential choice data. Next the chapter presents several models of the role of the run structure. These models include Restle's model and the generalization model. The generalization model falls within the conditioning framework and it incorporates several processes that were neglected in stimulus sampling models. Finally, the chapter discusses the type of model that might best describe the processes underlying sequential choice behavior. Constrained sequences and completely learnable sequences provide a better means of studying the processes in sequential choice behavior." @default.

These cover six average recurrence intervals in the range 2 to 100 years and require five climatic and catchment characteristics variables as inputs. An independent test indicates that the developed prediction equations can provide reasonably accurate design flood estimates for a range of applications. The method does not require assumption of geographical proximity as with the runoff coefficients in the Probabilistic Rational Method and can provide design flood estimates that are more accurate than the Probabilistic Rational Method." @default.

The purpose of this study was to retrospectively analyse the results in a cohort of 32 patients with a minimum follow-up of 12 months (range 12-37 months). Cases were acute (1) or chronic (31), involving either a native or reconstructed ligament. Native ACL injuries were: lax but intact (12 + 1 acute), partial tears with remaining intact femoral attachment (4) or completely torn and attached to the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) (6). Reconstructions were: Hamstrings (3), Bone-Patella Tendon-Bone (5) or allograft (1). We also recorded concomitant pathology, function status, Lysholm and Tegner scores and KT2000 values. The procedure was successful in limiting instability overall in 72% (23/32), and in particular 44% of reconstructed ligaments (4/9). There was no correlation of results to the treatment of co-existent pathology. The clinical scores remained high in successful cases although sporting function did reduce by follow-up. We conclude that despite these results the technique is still of value in appropriately selected, counselled and rehabilitated individuals. It is a safe technique that may avoid the necessity to proceed to reconstruction and can be considered as a planned procedure or as an adjunct to other therapy for instability at the time of arthroscopy for other pathology." @default.

Next, a polychotomous stepwise logistic regression was used in finding a multivariate model for determining dental user group membership. Logistic regression was used to ascertain which variables were discriminators between any two types of dental users.Mean number of medical visits, mean number of prescriptions filled, and race are determinants of group membership, with the nondental group having more medical visits and more likely to be white. Although year of birth cohort is statistically significant in determining dental user types, the direction of effect is not constant across the comparisons. However, the relative risk for being in the two complete denture groups, compared to both compliant subgroups, increases with each older cohort.Higher levels of medical use may crowd out dental use, even when it is without user cost, either because the medical problems are treated as a higher priority, or because dealing with medical needs leaves too little perceived time or energy to seek dental care. Even in a low-income population seeking dental care, there appears to be a birth cohort effect with a decline in the younger elderly who require two complete dentures." @default.

- W100013390 abstract "The purpose of this chapter is to evaluate the type of joints that are most suitable. A piping system forms the arteries through which a process fluid flows, and this pipe connects the various pieces of equipment that are required, within a plant, to refine the product. To facilitate changes of direction and regulate the flow, these straight lengths of pipe must be connected to piping components, valves and process equipment, to complete the system. Numerous options are available to the piping engineer responsible for specifying the correct method of jointing for a particular process piping system. There are several alternatives for joints to be used within metal piping systems: flanged, butt weld, socket weld, screwed, hubbed connections, mechanical coupling, and soldered. All these methods have potential leak paths, and careful consideration must be made during the material selection process and choosing the level of inspection to minimize the “in-service” fluid loss." @default.

I found clear correlations between the X-ray spectral slope α x , the UV slope α UV , and the optical-to-x-ray spectral slope α ox with the Eddington ratio L ∕ L Edd. A major aspect of the statistical analysis will be multi-variant analysis statistical tools such as the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis. This analysis shows that the main driver of the AGN properties in this sample is the Eddington ratio L ∕ L Edd. Although separating Seyfert 1s into Narrow Line Seyfert 1s and Broad Line Seyfert 1s is still a good classification, with the 2,000 km/s cutoff line it is arbitrary. The cluster analysis of this AGN sample suggests that we can separate AGN into those with high and low Eddington ratios and that they form physically distinct groups." @default.
- W1000134164 abstract "Macroinvertebrates were collected from 19 sites on 14 streams on the island of Oahu and from 9 sites on 7 streams on the island of Kauai to evaluate associations between macroinvertebrate assemblages and environmental variables and to determine whether or not it would be feasible, in future studies, to develop macroinvertebrate metrics that would indicate stream quality based on the macroinvertebrate assemblages and/or components of the assemblages. The purpose of applying rapid bioassessment techniques is to identify stream quality problems and to document changes in stream quality. Samples were collected at 10 sites in 1999, 3 sites in 2000, and 5 sites in 2003 on Oahu and at 9 sites on Kauai in 2003. Additionally, multiple year and multiple reach samples were collected at 1 site on Oahu. Macroinvertebrates were collected primarily from boulder/cobble riffles or from the fastest flowing habitat when riffles were absent. Although most streams in Hawaii originate in mountainous, forested areas, the lower reaches often drain urban, agricultural, or mixed land-use areas. The macroinvertebrate community data were used to identify metrics that could best differentiate between sites according to levels of environmental impairment. Environmental assessments were conducted using land-use/land-cover data, bed-sediment and fish-tissue contaminant data, and reach-level environmental data using a calibration set of 15 sites. The final scores of the environmental assessments were used to classify the sites into three categories of impairment: mild, moderate or severe. A number of invertebrate metrics were then tested and calibrated to the environmental assessments scores. The individual metrics that were the best at discerning environmental assessments among the sites were combined into a multimetric benthic index of biotic integrity (BIBI). These metrics were: total invertebrate abundance, taxa richness, insect relative abundance, amphipod abundance, crayfish presence or absence, and native mountain shrimp presence or absence. Because this index is in the preliminary stage of development and additional 'pristine' sites need to be sampled and assessed to develop a more robust measure of biotic integrity, the index will be referred to as a Preliminary Hawaiian Benthic Index of Biotic Integrity (P-HBIBI). The P-HBIBI scores were then classified into three categories of impairment: mild, moderate, or severe. The P-HBIBI was then used to assess the remaining sites and classify them into impairment categories. The P-HBIBI was correlated (r2 = 0.72; p < 0.005) with a reduced environmental assessment determined without contaminants data. The results of this study suggest that the development of a reliable Hawaiian benthic index of biotic integrity (HBIBI), based on macroinvertebrate assemblages, is feasible; however, a much larger sample size, including more samples from 'pristine' sites and from the other islands, would be required." @default.
- W100013426 abstract "Every year in Ontario, the records of over 42 million prescriptions dispensed to persons eligible for Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) benefits are transmitted to a central database. The ODB database is the second largest database of medications in Canada, containing records on almost half of all medications dispensed in Ontario. There is no information about the reliability of the coding on the ODB drug claims database and, therefore, the objective of this study was to estimate the reliability of coding of the Drug Identification Number, and the date, quantity and duration of the dispensation on claims sent to the ODB.To meet this objective, approximately 100 randomly selected prescriptions dispensed from each of 50 pharmacies in southern Ontario between July 1, 1998 and December 31, 1999 were audited. For each claim, the written information on the prescription was compared with the electronic information submitted to the ODB database. Logistic regression was used to test the association between coding errors and the location, owner affiliation, and productivity of each pharmacy (defined as the annual volume of dispensations divided by the annual number of hours worked by all pharmacists and pharmacy assistants).Of the 183 pharmacies owners invited to participate, consent to abstract information was obtained in 50, yielding a participation rate of 27%. Of the 5155 dispensed prescriptions, 37 errors were found, yielding an overall error rate of 0.7% (95% CI 0.5% to 0.9%). None of the characteristics of pharmacies that were examined (location, owner affiliation, productivity) was associated with coding errors.Pharmacists almost always dispense the medication that is prescribed and this information is reliably transmitted to the ODB drug claims database. This means that any conclusions drawn by researchers using these data are not likely to be compromised by low coding reliability." @default.

It was found that the functional groups linked on the peripheries of the porphyrins had an important influence on the combination mode of porphyrin and GO, and also the properties of GO–porphyrin composites. 5, 10, 15, 20-Tetrakis(4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin (THPP) was easy to react with GO and flat on the GO due to the strong hydrogen bond and π–π interaction between THPP and GO. It was reasonable to conclude that the distance between THPP and GO was reduced owing to the flattening of THPP on the surface of GO, which further strengthened the interactions. Therefore, the photoelectronic activity of the GO–THPP composite was higher than those of the other two porphyrins–GO composite. These results provided some hints for how to adjust the properties of the GO–porphyrin composites by modifying the combination mode between porphyrins and GO." @default.

- W1000136352 abstract "Despite persistent efforts at the local, state, and federal levels, alcohol-impaired crashes still contribute to approximately 30% of all traffic fatalities. Although enforcement and educational approaches have helped to reduce alcohol-impaired fatalities, other approaches will be required to further reduce alcohol-related fatalities. This paper describes an approach that detects alcohol impairment in real time using vehicle-based sensors to detect alcohol-related changes in drivers’ behavior. Data were collected on the National Advanced Driving Simulator from 108 volunteer drivers. Three age groups (21-34, 38-51, and 55-68 years of age) drove through representative situations on three types of roadways (urban, freeway, and rural) at three levels of blood alcohol content (0.00%, 0.05%, and 0.10% BAC). Driver control input, vehicle state, driving context and driver state data, individually and in combination, reveal signatures of alcohol impairment. Algorithms built on these signatures detect drivers with BAC levels that are over the legal limit with an accuracy of approximately 80%, similar to the Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) used by law enforcement. Each of the three algorithms combined information across time to predict impairment. The time required to detect impairment ranged from eight minutes, for complex algorithms (i.e., support vector machines and decision trees applied to relatively demanding driving situations), to twenty-five minutes for simple algorithms (i.e., logistic regression). Timely impairment detection depends critically on the driving context: variables specific to the particular driving situation result in much more timely impairment detection than generic variables." @default.

The nanocoatings presented slightly less microporosity, higher microhardness, higher fracture toughness but higher decarburization, than the conventional ones. The nanocoatings exhibited greater resistance to general corrosion and localized corrosion in 3.5% NaCl than their conventional counterparts. Other than an occasional removal of WC nanoparticles, corrosion modes appeared similar for both types of coatings, characterized by selective dissolution of Co, formation of protective surface films and crevice corrosion along interlayer boundaries. Both types of coatings exhibited high dry sliding wear resistance. Nevertheless, the wear performance of the nanocoatings was even superior than that of their conventional counterparts. Main wear modes included plastic deformation of binder, oxidative wear leading to the formation of lubricating oxides and adhesive wear leading to the formation of alumina-rich surface depositions (from the Al2O3 counter balls). Coating of Al7075 with nano WC–12Co was proved effective in terms of microstructural features, corrosion and wear behaviour." @default.
- W100013670 abstract "A selective-phrase-based preprocessor for use in generating the feature set of an e-mail message prior to its classification as spam or non-spam is presented. The proposed preprocessor subsumes the phrase-based preprocessor used by Yerazunis and the word-based preprocessor employed by Graham. In Yerazunis' phrased-based approach, a sliding window of W contiguous words is used to generate phrases, and all sub-phrases of each W-word phrase are used as features. In Graham's word-based method, just the individual words in an e-mail message are used as features. The primary goal of this investigation was to determine whether the classification accuracy attained by Yerazunis' preprocessor can be achieved at a lower computational cost by selecting a much smaller but promising set of phrases from which to generate the sub-phrases that constitute the features. The proposed preprocessor first identifies a small number f of words from the input text (namely, those that are most likely to appear in spam messages). For each such word, it then selects B distinct phrases of W contiguous words that contain that word and uses all sub-phrases of each such phrase as features. A secondary goal of the research was to investigate the sensitivity of the classification accuracy on f, B, and W. The methods used by the proposed preprocessor and the preprocessors devised by Yerazunis and Graham were tested on a benchmark corpus of e-mail messages. The classification accuracy and other metrics were measured and reported. The results indicated that the classification accuracy of the proposed preprocessor was comparable to that of Yerazunis' preprocessor while utilizing a much smaller set of features. In addition, the research indicated optimum values for f, B, and W: The best accuracies were achieved at (f, B, W) = (2, 1, 2) and (f, B, W) = (2, 2, 2)." @default.

- W1000137106 abstract "The use of agricultural waste for soil amendment is limited in developing countries. Competition between fuel and feed is the major cause for the insufficient application of agricultural waste on cropland. The aims of this study were therefore (i) to investigate variation in agricultural waste allocation between groups of farmers with different livelihood strategies and link this allocation with the nutrient balances of their production systems, (ii) to identify farm characteristics that influence utilisation of agricultural waste for soil amendment, and (iii) to assess demand for urban waste compost. A total of 220 farmers were selected randomly and interviewed using standardised semi-structured questionnaires. Four groups of farmers, namely (i) field crop farmers, (ii) vegetable producers, (iii) ornamental-plant growers, and (iv) farmers practising mixed farming, were identified using categorical principal component and two-step cluster analyses. Field crop farmers produced the largest quantity of agricultural waste, but they allocated 80% of manure to fuel and 85% of crop residues to feed. Only <10% of manure and crop residues were applied on soils. Farmers also sold manure and crop residues, and this generated 5–10% of their annual income. Vegetable and ornamental-plant growers allocated over 40% of manure and crop residues to soil amendment. Hence, nutrient balances were less negative in vegetable production systems. Education, farm size, land tenure and access to extension services were the variables that impeded allocation of agricultural waste to soil amendment. Replacement of fuel and feed through sustainable means is a viable option for soil fertility management. Urban waste compost should also be used as alternative option for soil amendment. Our results showed variation in compost demand between farmers. Education, landownership, experience with compost and access to extension services explained variation in compost demand. We also demonstrated that labour availability should be used to estimate compost demand beside cash." @default.

- W1000137790 abstract "Inwardly rectifying potassium channels play essential roles in renal physiology across phyla. Barium-sensitive K(+) conductances are found on the basolateral membrane of a variety of insect Malpighian (renal) tubules, including Drosophila melanogaster. We found that barium decreases the lumen-positive transepithelial potential difference in isolated perfused Drosophila tubules and decreases fluid secretion and transepithelial K(+) flux. In those insect species in which it has been studied, transcripts from multiple genes encoding inwardly rectifying K(+) channels are expressed in the renal (Malpighian) tubule. In Drosophila melanogaster, this includes transcripts of the Irk1, Irk2, and Irk3 genes. The role of each of these gene products in renal tubule function is unknown. We found that simultaneous knockdown of Irk1 and Irk2 in the principal cell of the fly tubule decreases transepithelial K(+) flux, with no additive effect of Irk3 knockdown, and decreases barium sensitivity of transepithelial K(+) flux by ∼50%. Knockdown of any of the three inwardly rectifying K(+) channels individually has no effect, nor does knocking down Irk3 simultaneously with Irk1 or Irk2. Irk1/Irk2 principal cell double-knockdown tubules remain sensitive to the kaliuretic effect of cAMP. Inhibition of the Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase with ouabain and Irk1/Irk2 double knockdown have additive effects on K(+) flux, and 75% of transepithelial K(+) transport is due to Irk1/Irk2 or ouabain-sensitive pathways. In conclusion, Irk1 and Irk2 play redundant roles in transepithelial ion transport in the Drosophila melanogaster renal tubule and are additive to Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase-dependent pathways." @default.

However, as a group they are prevalent enough to constitute an important diagnostic challenge. Connective tissue disorders most significantly affect three systems: musculoskeletal, ocular and cardiovascular. The cardinal feature of the majority of these disorders is ligamentous laxity, or joint hypermobility. The joints show an increased range of movement, and the child may present with arthralgias, effusions and an increased risk of joint or soft tissue injury. Marfan syndrome is the most common heritable connective tissue disorder. It is an autosomal dominant condition with high penetrance but with striking pleiomorphism. In 25% of individuals there is no family history. The diagnosis is often not made until late childhood. Individuals are tall with a low upper: lower segment ratio and an arm span greater than height. Other skeletal characteristics include pectus deformity and scoliosis. Myopia and astigmatism are common. Cardiac abnormalities include mitral valve prolapse, mitral regurgitation and arrhythmias. Early diagnosis, meticulous echocardiographic follow-up and multidisciplinary assessment are essential. The Ehlers-Danlos syndromes share a triad of features: skin hyperextensibility, articular hypermobility, and tissue fragility. The abnormalities are caused by genetic defects resulting in the faulty synthesis or structure of collagen. There is a wide variety of phenotypes and mode of inheritance. Symptom management and joint protection are important to improve quality of life and prevent secondary complications. Osteogenesis imperfecta encompasses a group of rare heritable disorders associated with low bone mass and increased susceptibility to fractures. Increased bone fractures after minimal trauma is the cardinal feature. Other features include blue sclera, hearing loss, scoliosis, deafness, and hypermobility." @default.

Dichloromethane, ethanol and aqueous extracts from two different varieties of M. paradisiaca, i.e., Nangka and Tanduk peels against eight (8) pathogenic bacteria (Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Burkholderiacepacia, Vibrio alginolyticus, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus) and three (3) fungal species (Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis and Candida krusei) were evaluated using disc diffusion and broth micro-dilution methods. The best activity by disc diffusion method for bacteria was demonstrated by ethanolic extract of Tanduk peel against S. aureus (30 mm) while the best activity for fungi showed by dichloromethane extract of Tanduk peel against C. krusei (10 mm). Moreover, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) results showed that all extracts inhibited the growth of tested microorganisms in the range of 6.25 to 100 mg/mL. The results of MBC/MFC showed that some extracts were bactericidal or fungicidal while others were bacteriostatic or fungistatic in nature. Therefore, the extracts of M. paradisiaca peel waste could be potential source as antimicrobial alternatives and may be effective to utilize as a natural source of antimicrobial agent in pharmaceutical industries." @default.

Interviews were performed with prison and TB dispensary staff. Treatment follow-up rates were estimated by matching prison release records against attendance records from all 17 St. Petersburg-based TB dispensaries over an 18-month period.Of 80 released prisoners with active TB in 2002, 21 (26.3%) appeared in dispensary attendance records. Barriers to the completion of TB treatment overall were homelessness, unemployment, alcoholism, drug addiction and difficulty tolerating TB medications with co-morbid illnesses such as human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis. Prisoners and former prisoners ranked help with obtaining an internal passport and money first, followed closely by food and a job, as the most desirable incentives to completing TB treatment.A future program for soon-to-be released and released prisoners in St. Petersburg that offers an array of desirable flexible social welfare services and incentives has the potential to attract and retain patients within TB treatment, but continued efforts must also be made to include drug treatment, job training and keeping former prisoners out of prison." @default.

Method: Comparison of pre- and post-counseling services from February-September 1999. Both verbal and written reinforcement were used for counseling. Results: Data were collected on 97 patients with mitral stenosis (29.9%), mitral valve replacement (43.3%), and atrial fibrillation (26.8%). The numbers of patients whose International Normalized Ratio (INR) was in the therapeutic range for each indication were not statistically different between before and after receiving counseling (p > 0.05). The number of patients with subtherapeutic INRs was greater in those with mitral valve replacement than in the other groups. Minor bleeding was reported more frequently during the counseling service than the pre-counseling period (41 vs 12, p Conclusion: Pharmacist counseling through verbal and written reinforcement could improve patients' knowledge of warfarin therapy, and may enable the patients to identify complications related to the therapy, particularly minor bleedings. Pharmacist counseling may not be the only factor that could affect the control of INRs and complications related to warfarin therapy." @default.
- W100013964 abstract "The relation between stress and coronary diseases is controversial. Both positive and null or negative results are equally obtained. An explanation of this can be that the most widely used stress questionnaires are not able to collect all the factors that constitute stress perception. Indeed, from a clinical and experimental perspective, the stress/coronary diseases relation is evident. More consistent results are obtained between coronary diseases and socio-economic status. In order to cover all the social factors and describe them better, a new, purely theoretical contribution is then introduced: social capital. This is a more sophisticated version of social cohesion, social integration and social support. Finally, for the future, the interdisciplinary method is recommended for health surveillance in the workplace." @default.

In particular, the task is to determine automatically an altered road surface for vehicles (may be due to weather conditions) with possibly lower adhesion between tires and road. Fault detection methods like the parity space approach can be used to detect changes in technical processes. These changes indicate different process behaviour in a new operation range. This may be of special importance when the new behaviour is more dangerous for the driver and the passengers of a car. In a further step, suitable classification algorithms were used to detect the actual driving state by processing the residual output." @default.

These studies have led to phenomenologicalmodels for QCD such as the constituent quark model. However, QCD allows for a much richer spectrum of meson states which include extra states such as exotics, hybrids, multi-quarks, and glueballs. First discussion of the status of exotic meson searches is given followed by a discussion of plans at Jefferson Lab to double the energy of the machine to 12 GeV, which will allow us to access photoproduction of mesons in search for gluonic excited states." @default.
- W1000140396 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses semimicro extraction of ubiquinone and menaquinone from bacteria. Many extraction procedures have been described for the isolation of quinones from various sources. When quinones are extracted from intact bacteria, the character of the cell wall plays a significant role. In many cases, the extraction is facilitated substantially by the destruction of the wall, for example, by ultrasonic disintegration, which makes the cell membrane more penetrable to organic solvents. The simple extraction procedure described in this chapter proved to be successful for the isolation of both ubiquinone and menaquinone from bacterial preparations. The quantitative analysis of the obtained impure extract by the difference absorption technique increases the accuracy of results and speeds up the whole method of quinone determination. This extraction procedure works with a solvent mixture that extracts quinones quantitatively, both from membrane fragments and intact cells without any danger of their destruction, giving better results compared with other solvents and techniques. It also stops all the enzymic reactions by causing protein precipitation, thus being useful when the redox state of quinones is to be estimated." @default.
