- 75b8d2f7-5c8a-41d3-9660-ebd2f2cb4b4b definition "Plume Model Validation and Development Study The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) undertook a significant experimental and analytic project to evaluate atmospheric dispersion models currently applied to electric generating facilities and to provide data bases for developing improved plume models. This project, the Plume Model Validation and Development (PMV&D) project, comprises four studies of plumes in different environmental settings. The initial phase of the PMV&D project examined plume dispersion behavior in relatively uncomplicated terrain. Field measurement programs were conducted in the vicinity of the Kincaid Generating Station in central Illinois, which is located in smooth, level terrain. The measurement programs included nine months of continuous monitoring of air quality, meteorological, and power plant emission variables, supplemented by three three-week periods of intensive, specialized measurements of plume dispersion. The second phase of the PMV&D project investigated plume behavior in moderately complex terrain. Field measurement programs were carried out in the vicinity of the Bull Run steam plant, situated 20 km west of Knoxville and 8 km east of Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The field programs at this site included two four-week periods of intensive, specialized measurements of plume dispersion. The behavior of plumes in complex terrain was studied during a third phase in a joint effort with EPA at the Sierra Pacific Power Company's Tracy plant, 20 km east of Reno, Nevada along the Truckee River. A preliminary experiment was conducted at the site over a four-week period, including two weeks of intensive measurements of plume behavior. This study laid the groundwork for the design of EPA's Full Scale Plume Study (FSPS) at that site. EPRI supported both programs by supplying airborne lidar sampling of the power plant plume. Finally, the fourth phase of the PMV&D Project was a study conducted at the Perry-K Steam Station of Indianapolis (Indiana) Power and Light Company to investigate plume behavior in an urban environment. The plant is located about 1 km from the urban center of Indianapolis.
