The main objectives of the RA-2 are high-precision measurements of significant wave height and sea level determination, ocean circulation, ice sheet topography and land mapping. The 3.2 GHz channel is used to measure and correct for ionospheric delays. The RA-2 uses an adaptive range window with a bandwidth of 330 MHz for measurements over ice surfaces. The RA-2 ensures continuity with the ERS-1 and ERS-2 radar altimeters (RA).
