- W100028116 abstract "The positive causal association between absolute income and health is robust across thenempirical evidence. However, the impact of income inequality on health is not consistent.nThe conclusions from empirical studies are largely dependent on the region or countrynstudied and the methodology employed. Using the Household, Income and LabournDynamics in Australia survey for 2001-2008, this thesis offers a unique contribution byninvestigating the relationship in Australia for the first time. The research extends on thenexisting literature by addressing a wide range of considerations in the methodology andneconometric techniques. The Gini coefficient, Theil, and Atkinson indices of incomeninequality are calculated at the neighbourhood level to test the Income InequalitynHypothesis. The Relative Deprivation Hypothesis is also tested using the Yitzhaki indexnfor individual deprivation. These measures are analysed for their associations withnsubjective health outcomes of physical functioning, mental health, general health andnchronic disease.nnnnnnnn n Linear panel data methods are employed to accommodate for individual heterogeneitynand non-linear models are employed for the ordered and binary health outcomes. Thenenquiry finds mental health to be adversely affected by the presence of relativendeprivation, with some support also for the Income Inequality Hypothesis. There is nonevidence that the other measures of health are affected by inequality. Potential bias in thenestimates from the endogeneity of income is addressed through sensitivity analysis.nFurthermore, occupations are explored as an alternative reference group, contributing tonthe understanding of the impact of social comparisons on individual health outcomes.nnnnnnn n Preceding the empirical investigation is a multi-disciplinary enquiry into the theories thatnidentify the potential transmission mechanisms from inequality to health and its policynimplications.n" @default.

In order to study some of the dynamics of this stereotype, the life history genre was used to interpret one such case: a young woman pseudonymed Vivian who showed unusual commitment, yet who quit that field of service. In 1984 she tape recorded details of her 13 years as a residential counsellor with mentally handicapped people in southern Ontario." @default.

The effects of the reaction time and hydrothermal temperature on the preparation of this material have been studied. The manganite nanoparticles were thoroughly characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermal analyses (TGA–DTA). The electrochemical properties of the product were investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The material exhibits stable and rectangular shaped cycles, implying a good reversibility of the diffusion process of lithium ion Li+ inside the modified electrode." @default.

- W1000282415 abstract "This study was performed to examine the efficacy of structured group reminiscence on the enhancement of life quality and happiness of the elderly in Hamedan. The study design was pretestposttest with control group. The statistical method was variance analysis with double repeated measure analysis. Twenty four elderlies (10 females, 14 men) with age ranges of 60-82 years old (M= 70.79, SD= 7.83) were assigned equally to control and experimental groups. The experimental group received 12 weekly sessions of structured reminiscence. To record the trend of changes in scores, the participants were asked to complete the short form of Life Quality (SF-36; Ware & Sherbourne, 1992) and Depression-Happiness (McGreal & Joseph, 1993) questionnaires in the pretest phase, the third session, the sixth session, the ninth session, the twelfth session and one month after the intervention. The results indicated that structured group reminiscence did not have any significant effect on life quality score of the elderly. Yet, the score of happiness increased significantly and these achievements were remained in one-month follow up. Based on the findings, the necessity of using structural group reminiscence for enhancing positive emotions in the elderly was emphasized." @default.

This theory is a generalization of the classic theory of normed vector spaces, examining the relations that arise in a space with both a topological and a vector space structure. The chapter explains the nonstandard treatment that deals with most of the important standard constructions and theorems." @default.
- W1000283971 abstract "Coronary artery bypass surgery has shown a dramatic increase in frequency in most industrialised societies. The reduction in mortality has led to an increased interest in morbidity. One area of morbidity is that of changes in cognition following surgery which are taken to reflect changes in brain function. This area of research utilises neuropsychological tests and has been performed for some time in cardiac surgery. Evaluation of this research over time is complicated by changes in surgical practice, different numbers and types of neuropsychological tests administered and the mode of analysis performed on the data [1]. Surgical practise has altered in a number of ways and is now further evolving in the light of data from neuropsychological studies. One index which reflects these changes is the duration of time on extracorporeal circulation (bypass time). In early studies long bypass times were recorded while in our own work a mean bypass time of approximately 85 minutes is common. The number of neuropsychological tests performed has varied considerable. So me studies report using one or two tests [2,3] while in our studies we have used ten tests which are described elsewhere [4–6]. It is important also, to place the form of neuropsychological assessment performed in the context of cardiac surgery into perspective. The design of all studies require adjustments to be made to accommodate the clinical environment." @default.
@default.

Especially with the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Prof. Yunus, microcredit lending has risen to prominence and the volume of microcredit loans has increased substantially. However, theory on this financing form is controversial. Further, the academic community lacks conclusive evidence about the impact of such programs. Primary empirical studies report fragmented and to a large extent contradictory results. In this meta-analysis, we empirically synthesize a total of 637 quantitative empirical findings from 97 studies conducted to date to depict whether and how microcredit financing impacts entrepreneurs’ financial well-being and human development. With our findings we contribute to research on the nexus of entrepreneurship in the informal economy and economic development, and offer recommendations for practitioners and academics working on this promising and ambitious frontier." @default.

- W1000288115 abstract "Abstract A low-resolution version of the ECMWF global atmosphere model has been coupled to a global ocean model developed at the Max Planck Institute in Hamburg. The atmosphere model is driven by the sea surface temperature and the ice thickness calculated by the ocean model, which, in return, is driven by the wind stress, the heat flux and the freshwater flux diagnosed by the atmosphere model. Even though each model reaches stationarity when integrated on its own, the coupling of both creates problems, since the fields calculated by each model are not consistent with the ones the other model has to have in order to stay stationary, because some of the fluxes are not balanced. In the coupled experiment the combined ocean-atmosphere system drifts towards a colder state. To counteract this problem, a flux correction has been applied which balances the mean biases of each model. This method almost eliminates the climate drift of the coupled model. Problems still arise over ice covered regions." @default.
- W100028812 abstract "Thirty years before Beaumont's publication of his observations of Alexis St. Martin, Pierre Jean Georges Cabanis, a brilliant but now little-known French physiologist, reported clinical data on digestive disturbances that accompany emotional upset. With extraordinary prescience he distinguished emotional states associated with the suppression of digestion from those that were accompanied by accelerated gastric secretory and motor function. However, Beaumont was the first to document the inhibitory effects on digestion by direct observation of the stomach. Later, others documented the excitatory effects, provided further detail concerning emotional states, and began to identify neuronal pathways and humoral mechanisms responsible for the phenomena. The integrative mechanisms in the brain that link life experience to gastric responses have come under study recently; the process has turned out to be immensely complex. Several neurotransmitters have been identified that subserve the facilitatory and inhibitory mechanisms converging on the efferent neurons that ultimately elicit patterns of visceral and general behavior. However, investigations of cognitive and emotional responses to stressful experiences have been largely neglected in humans. Although sophisticated methods and instruments exist that record in a noninvasive fashion a whole spectrum of gastric behavior, such studies are now out of fashion. To fully explore the stomach's link to the brain, research on the entire human organism must be revived." @default.

- W1000288732 abstract "AIDS--acquired immune deficiency syndrome--is a deadly new sexually transmitted disease now spreading rapidly in much of the world. At present there is no cure. For family planning and related health workers AIDS creates special responsibilities because: 1) people will bring their questions and concerns about AIDS to family planning and other maternal health workers; 2) sexual intercourse is the major way that AIDS is transmitted; and 3) family planning programs can supply condoms and tell people how to use them. The 7 basic facts about AIDS are: 1) AIDS is a fatal disease that cannot now be cured; 2) AIDS is not spread by casual contact; 3) AIDS is spread by sexual intercourse by contaminated blood and by contaminated hypodermic needles; 4) an infected woman can give AIDS to her child during pregnancy; 5) a stable faithful relationship with another uninfected person is safest; 6) for the sexually active always using condoms is good protection against AIDS; 7) a person can look and feel healthy and still be able to spread the infection that causes AIDS. As of August 1986 71 countries had reported almost 29000 cases of AIDS. Currently the largest numbers have been reported in the US Western Europe Central Africa Brazil and Haiti. Worldwide as many as 5 to 10 million people may be infected with the virus that causes AIDS the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Most of these people have no symptoms now but can infect others. Many of these people are expected to develop AIDS eventually. In North America Europe and Brazil most cases have involved homosexual men or users of intravenous drugs who have shared contaminated needles. In Africa and Haiti many women are developing AIDS. The number of children with AIDS is expected to grow and in some areas AIDS may become a major threat to child survival. AIDS results from a viral infection that damages the immune system. The damaged immune system cannot protect against certain other infections and cancers some of which then become the direct causes of death. With no cure or vaccine in sight the only real hope for controlling AIDS now is education that changes peoples behavior. Family planning and other health workers must lead but the mass media community and national leaders parents and teachers must also help." @default.
- W1000288773 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter describes the development of apparatus for the understanding of turbulence. The discussion makes reference to additional specialized facilities needed for other problems of interest, such as the study of dusty flows, the aerodynamics of wind flow around clusters of high-rise buildings, and the flow of polymers. Both wind tunnels and free-flight facilities have been utilized to study problems associated with the motion of flight vehicles in the atmosphere for purposes of aircraft design and aerodynamic research. The wind tunnel is a partially or totally enclosed configuration in which, typically, a moving air stream of desired pressure and temperature passes over a suitably scaled and mounted stationary model. It is found that because it is the relative motion that matters, such variation on the free-flight case does not in itself introduce restriction on interpretation of experimental results. It is suggested that measurement of lift, drag, structural stresses, and flow interference over adjacent aircraft components, flutter and other stability problems are only some of the aircraft design problems whose study has now extended into the supersonic range with a suitable variation of Reynolds number." @default.

- W100028986 abstract "This research surveys twenty large companies and their travellers to identify and evaluate the effects of pressures on the business travel market in the future. The influence of the following areas on the decision making process are addressed: (1) Corporate travel policies and increasing professionalism in corporate purchasing; (2) The development of global strategic airline alliances; (3) The emergence of low cost airlines on short haul markets; and (4) The development of internet based booking tools and travel agency IT. The survey shows differences in views between travel managers, and travellers with regard to corporate travel policies. While travel managers see policy rules, travellers interpret these as guidelines, indicating travel managers will need to take further actions to exercise true control of travel budgets. The data shows that companies are more likely to prescribe a class of airline ticket, than the choice of airline itself. Corporate hierarchical bias in travel policies is still common both for short and particularly long haul flying. Other findings show that while travel managers believe that their companies are likely to sign global deals with strategic airline groups within a five year period in a bid to consolidating spending, they also believe that nearly a third of short haul flying will be taken with low cost carriers, indicating further penetration in this business travel market by these carriers. The paper also provides other predictions about the business travel market, based on the survey findings." @default.

The aim of this study was to explore the nutrition knowledge, skills and attitudes of Home and Community Care (HACC) workers in the Gold Coast region using a qualitative research framework. Sixteen semi-structured phone interviews were recorded, transcribed and analysed thematically. The respondents showed an awareness of undernutrition in the elderly as well as favourable attitudes towards prevention. The HACC workers tended to follow the Malnutrition Screening Tool as protocol intended. The respondents also showed they have the skills to refer clients at risk of undernutrition to the recommended services or practitioners. Many respondents felt that their clients often lacked motivation to participate in health promoting behaviours or to accept assistance or referral. Further investigation is needed to understand why elderly people may lack motivation to improve their health or accept assistance from health services. - W1000291231 abstract "Neglect is a neuropsychological disorder characterized by the failure to report or respond to stimuli presented to the side of the body opposite a brain lesion and occurs in approximately 40% of right hemisphere strokes. The need for effective therapies to treat neglect in humans has led to the development of a rodent model. Unilateral destruction of medial agranular cortex (AGm), which is part of a cortical network for directed attention, produces severe multimodal neglect with deficits similar to those seen in humans. Amphetamines have previously been investigated for inducing plasticity and recovery of function following brain damage. Amphetamine treatment has been shown to produce recovery from visual, frontal, and sensorimotor cortex damage in animals and this recovery may be the result of axonal growth originating from the opposite, unlesioned hemisphere. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether amphetamine treatment would induce recovery from neglect produced by unilateral AGm destruction, the time frame in which amphetamine must be administered in order to be effective, and the permanence of recovery following treatment. The results indicated that subjects injected with 2mg/kg of d-amphetamine on days 0, 2, and 5 recovered in significantly fewer days than saline-treated controls, even when administration was delayed by 2 and 7 days. Additionally, these studies indicated that recovery persisted for at least 60 days suggesting that recovery is likely to be long term." @default.

- W100029159 abstract "Field tests were performed to determine the upwelling flow from the air diffusers located in Upper Bear Creek reservoir. The diffusers were installed in an effort to maintain aerobic conditions throughout the water column, so that the reservoir and hence low level summer releases would not contain high concentrations of dissolved iron, manganese, and sulfide. Three tests were conducted using one diffuser, at the normal air flow rate of 0.012 m/sup 3//sec (25 scfm), at an increased air flow rate of 0.024 m/sup 3//sec (50 scfm) and at reduced air flow rate of 0.006 m/sup 3//sec (12.5 scfm). The upwelling from the air diffuser was dyed with Rhodamine WT and concentrations in the flow away current were measured to estimate the total upwelling flow. Velocity measurements obtained in the flow away current provided a second estimate of the upwelling flow. These field estimates at the Upper Bear Creek diffuser were compared with equations found in the literature. The measured Upper Bear Creek diffuser upwelling flow was greater than these equations predicted, although the general magnitude was confirmed. 18 refs., 5 figs., 3 tabs." @default.
- W1000292554 abstract "Purpose: One of the more critical initiating events for reproductive cell death is the creation of a DNA double strand break (DSB). In this study, we present a computationally efficient way to determine spatial variations in the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of proton therapy beams within the FLUKA Monte Carlo (MC) code. Methods: We used the independently tested Monte Carlo Damage Simulation (MCDS) developed by Stewart and colleagues (Radiat. Res. 176, 587–602 2011) to estimate the RBE for DSB induction of monoenergetic protons, tritium, deuterium, hellium-3, hellium-4 ions and delta-electrons. The dose-weighted (RBE) coefficients were incorporated into FLUKA to determine the equivalent ⁶°60Co γ-ray dose for representative proton beams incident on cells in an aerobic and anoxic environment. Results: We found that the proton beam RBE for DSB induction at the tip of the Bragg peak, including primary and secondary particles, is close to 1.2. Furthermore, the RBE increases laterally to the beam axis at the area of Bragg peak. At the distal edge, the RBE is in the range from 1.3–1.4 for cells irradiated under aerobic conditions and may be as large as 1.5–1.8 for cells irradiated under anoxic conditions. Across the plateau region, the recorded RBE for DSB induction is 1.02 for aerobic cells and 1.05 for cells irradiated under anoxic conditions. The contribution to total effective dose from secondary heavy ions decreases with depth and is higher at shallow depths (e.g., at the surface of the skin). Conclusion: Multiscale simulation of the RBE for DSB induction provides useful insights into spatial variations in proton RBE within pristine Bragg peaks. This methodology is potentially useful for the biological optimization of proton therapy for the treatment of cancer. The study highlights the need to incorporate spatial variations in proton RBE into proton therapy treatment plans." @default.

- W100029345 abstract "Plants in nature are generally resistant to most of the pathogens they encounter. However, many flingal pathogens can cause severe diseases and significant yield losses in crops. Plants defend themselves against pathogens through a combination of constitutive and inducible defenses. The induced plant defense is particularly characterized by an increased accumulation of pathogenesis-related proteins (PRs). Since the discovery of PRs in 1970, several PR families have been identified. The specific function of many PRs is still unknown, although several are postulated to play a role in preventing pathogen invasion. The aim of my research was to study spatial and temporal localization of PRs and accumulation of their corresponding mRNAs to better understand the role and possible function of PRs in plant defense. As a model system I studied the interaction between barley and the hemibiotrophic fungus Bipolaris sorokiniana, which causes severe yield losses worldwide. The studies are mainly focused on three PRs (PR-I, PR-3 and PR-5). These PRs accumulated in both leaves and roots of barley seedlings as a response to infection of the respective tissues. However, the accumulation of PRs in roots was dependent on whether young or old root segments were infected. A stronger response was found when young root segments were inoculated in comparison to old roots. All three PRs appear to be part of a prefoimed defense since both PR-I and PR-5 were constitutively present in both xylem and phloem tissues and the root epidermis, and PR-3 showed a high constitutive presence mainly in the epidermis of leaves and to some extent in the phloem. In response to infection, all three proteins were highly induced in the ground tissues and to some extent in the vascular tissues. PR-I, PR-3 and PR-5 mRNAs accumulated in a biphasic pattern in leaves from both leaf- and root-infected seedlings. This biphasic accumulation pattern of transcripts was not detectable in roots. These results suggest that different induction strategies may be active in barley seedlings depending on the primary site of infection by B. sorokiniana. PR-I, PR-3 and PR-S were all recovered over the cell walls of inter- and intracellular hyphae of B. sorokiniana indicating that they may influence fungal growth." @default.
- W100029364 abstract "Sulgidduk samples made with additions of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5% Ulmus cortex powder, and a control, were examined for quality characteristics such as moisture content, color, gelatinization properties, textural characteristics, and consumer acceptance, in order to determine the optimal ratio of Ulmus cortex powder in the formulation. The moisture contents among the samples were not significantly different, ranging from 40.57 to 42.37%, and increased as the Ulmus cortex powder content increased. For the color values, lightness decreased and yellowness and redness increased with increasing Ulmus cortex powder content. With regard to the gelatinization properties, peak viscosity (P), trough viscosity (T), final viscosity (F), breakdown, and consistency increased with increasing amounts of Ulmus cortex powder. Pasting temperature, time to peak viscosity, and setback presented decreasing tendencies with the additions of Ulmus cortex powder. For the textural characteristics, increasing Ulmus cortex powder content presented decreases in hardness, springiness, and chewiness however, adhesiveness, cohesiveness, and gumminess were not significantly different among samples. In the consumer acceptance test, the scores of all evaluated characteristics decreased as the ratio of Ulmus cortex powder increased. However, the intensity ratings for the 1 and 2% Ulmus cortex powder samples showed the opposite effect, obtaining fairly good scores. In conclusion, the results indicate that adding Ulmus cortex powder to Sulgidduk is optimal, providing good physiological properties and reasonably high consumer acceptability." @default.

The results show that adsorption of nonionic surfactants on alumina was enhanced significantly by the coadsorption of ionic surfactants. The adsorption beha vior of these binary surfactant mixtures was dependent upon the ratio of the two surfactants in the mixture. With an increase in the ionic surfactant content, the adsorption of nonionicsurfactant increased and the isothenn shifted to lower surfactant concentrations. - W100029601 abstract "The talk discusses a mathematical theory for cognitive engineering, which significantly improves solutions of many engineering problems and at the same time models spiritual feelings in the human brain-mind. This convergence of scientific, engineering, and religious theories indicates a possibility of signal developments. C. Jung wrote that schism between science and religion points to a psychosis of contemporary collective psyche; survival of culture demands repairing of this schism. Many outstanding scientists are trying to mend this schism. Many books are written arguing that the newest scientific discoveries in molecular biology, evolution, and cosmology do not contradict the main tenets of the world's religions. But there is no scientific theory, explaining spiritual dimension of the mindbrain. Every one who is seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the This Einsteinian statement remains outside of science. Understanding of the mind mechanisms today came close to explaining spirituality from scientific point of view. The talk tells about the knowledge instinct, driving growth of the mind, responsible for our higher mental abilities of abstract symbolic thinking, for beautiful and sublime, and for evolution of cultures. A mathematical theory is presented. This theory is a mathematical breakthrough that overcame decades of limitations in AI, pattern recognition, neural networks, and other attempts to solve complex problems by modeling the brain-mind. Solutions of engineering problems are presented that overcome previous difficulties of computational complexity, and result in orders of magnitude improvements in detection, prediction, tracking, fusion, and learning situations. This theory is extended to higher cognitive functions. It models the knowledge instinct operating on the hierarchy of the human brain-mind. At the bottom of the hierarchy are simple objects, higher up are situations, general and abstract concepts, unifying contents of lower levels. At the top are concepts unifying our entire knowledge; we perceive them as concepts of the meaning and purpose of our existence. The mathematical theory explains why these concepts are inherently vague and unconscious and our consciousness is in great doubt about their very existence. When we feel that we have understood them a bit better or our belief in their existence got a bit firmer, we feel the emotion of beautiful. In parallel with the concepts of understanding the meaning and purpose, we have concepts of behavior needed to realize the beauty in our life. When we feel that we have understood these behavioral concepts a bit better or our belief in their existence got a bit firmer, we feel the emotion of spiritually sublime. Science explains that beautiful and sublime are not final notions. It follows from Godel theory, that mechanisms of the highest aspirations of human spirit are not logically reducible to finite statements. Attempts to compute them logically exceed in complexity all elementary interactions in the Universe in its entire lifetime and therefore choices of beautiful and sublime involve more information than is available in the Universe. A possibility of these choices is called a miracle in traditional language. A computational theory of these choices goes together with a proof that science is not reducible. Laws governing our highest values would not be reduced to laws governing a leaf flying with the wind. Hamiltonian formulation of the fundamental laws of physics leads to what is commonly considered a scientific causality: particles and fields move under forces, and the next moment is a consequence of the previous one. Lagrangian formulation leads to teleological formulation: particles and fields move toward a purpose, maximum of Lagrangian function (minimum of energy in the parlance of the middle school physics). The Lagrangian equivalence of causality and purpose exists in physics of few particles, but it does not exist in statistical physics of complex systems. The mathematical theory of the knowledge instinct made equivalent causality and teleology for very complex systems, the human mind and culture evolve causally according to dynamic logic and evolve teleologically toward maximization of knowledge. This defines the new arrow of time. The talk discusses brain imaging experiments conducted at Harvard Brain Imaging Lab confirming this theory. Contents of models of beautiful and sublime are unconscious; they do not belong to our consciousness. They are collective, outside of consciousness. Consciousness does not control them, they control our consciousness. Therefore, we feel them as a source of agency outside of ourselves. In recent discussions it is called Designer." @default.

Previous studies indicate that the scSAT exhibits anisotropic structure and property when it is cultured on a plate having a microgroove structure. However, the effect of microgroove depth on the tensile properties of the scSAT remains unknown. Therefore, the effect was determined in the present study. Micro pattern-processed glass plates having an array of parallel grooves (width: 100 m, depth: 10 or 30 m) were developed through lithographic and isotropic wet etching. Human synovium-derived mesencymal stem cells were cultured in the DMEM with ascorbic acid 2-phoshate at the density of 6.0 x 105 cells/cm2. The cells and their native extracellular matrix were subsequently detached from the microgrooved plates with 10 m in depth (MG10) and 30 m in depth (MG30). Microscopic observation indicated that no orientation was observed in the control group, while cells and matrix were oriented along the direction of the grooves in the MG groups. The mechanical properties of the scSAT showed that the tensile strength and stiffness were significantly higher in the MG groups than in the control group. Moreover, the tensile strength was significantly higher in the MG 30 group than in the MG10 group. It is suggested that the micro-processed glass plate having the microgroove with 100 m width and 10 or 30 m in depth provides the scSAT with anisotropic structure and properties." @default.
- W1000296265 abstract "This chapter describes the isolation of phage-resistant mutants of Salmonella typhirnurium. The adsorption of bacteriophages to bacterial cells depends on the presence of specific receptor sites on the cell surface. In Salmonella and some other gram negative enteric bacteria the lipopolysaccharides which contain the O-antigen determinants provide receptor sites for a variety of phages. In several instances sensitivity to a phage depends on the presence of specific structures in the polysaccharide. The procedures for isolation of mutants of S. typhimurium lacking uridine diphosphate (UDP)-galactose 4-epimerase and phosphomannose isomerase are described in the chapter. The procedure are generally applicable to Salmonella species of serogroups A, B, and D of the Kauffmann–White classification, which are also sensitive to P22, and other species for which phages of the appropriate receptor specificities are available. A culture of S. typhimurium LT-2 is treated with mutagenic agent and then allowed a period of growth to permit full phenotypic expression of the desired mutation. The culture is treated with a virulent mutant of P22 to kill the majority population, which retains the wild type lipopolysaccharide, and the survivors are plated on nutrient agar and replicated onto galactose indicator plates." @default.

An example of an infinite dimensional compact metric space with no one-dimensional closed subset is obtained as the intersection of a countable number of closed subsets K1, K2, … of H where the Ki's have two important properties. The chapter presents these important properties. The first property insures that K = K1 ∩ K2 ∩ … contains no closed one-dimensional subset. The second important property of the Ki's is chosen to insure that K is not zero-dimensional or null." @default.
- W1000296760 abstract "The mechanisms of low-cycle fatigue damage of two high-purity ferritic alloys, Fe-3Si and Fe-26Cr-lMo, have been investigated at room temperature using both polycrystal and single crystal specimens. The cyclic stress-strain behavior and the fatigue crack initiation mechanisms are shown to be sensitive to the applied strain rate and the crystal orientation. In the case of single crystals, high strain rates (≥10 - 3 s - 1 ) give rise to large cyclic stress asymmetries and crystal shape changes. In bicrystals and polycrystals the cyclically induced grain distortions lead to intergranular crack initiation. Low cyclic strain rates favor the formation of persistent slip bands and hence transgranular crack initiation and reduced fatigue lives. These results are interpreted as a consequence of the asymmetry of dislocation motion in the body-centered-cubic (bcc) lattice. Other unusual features of the cyclic deformation of bcc alloys, such as the softening and hardening behavior at low amplitudes and deformation banding, are described and discussed." @default.

Amann derived an a priori bound for solutions of parabolic problems with nonlinear boundary conditions in the Sobolev space W s p (Ω,R ) (s ≥ 1, p > n, Ω ⊂ R bounded). The result ([1, Theorem 15.2]) is based on the assumptions of an apriori estimate for the solutions in some weaker norm (in W s0 p0 (Ω,R N ), s > s0, p0 ≥ 1) and of suitable growth conditions for the local nonlinearities arising in the problem. However, the proof of this result contains some discrepancies (the choice of r in the proof does not match the assumptions in [1, Lemma 15.1]) and the result itself is not correct in the case n = 1: the growth of the function g arising in the boundary condition has to be controlled by the power 1 + p0/(n − s0p0) also in this case. The aim of this paper is to give a correct proof of a modification of the result mentioned above and to show that the growth assumption is optimal for n = 1." @default.

- W1000297707 abstract "Most Gram-positive bacterial cell walls are composed of two types of structural components, the peptidoglycan (PG) with highly conserved composition and additional cell wall glycopolymers (CWGs), which vary extensively between species and even between individual strains. This chapter describes the structures, biosynthesis, and functions of different CWGs, including teichoic acids (TAs), lipoteichoic acid (LTA), and others CWGs. CWG polymers are composed of repeating units containing one or more sugar building blocks plus nonsugar residues such as phosphate, alanine, succinate, pyruvate, choline, or mycolic acids to name a few. Those CWGs containing phosphate in the polymer backbone are traditionally referred to as TAs. Many Gram-positive bacteria produce CWGs without phosphate groups in repeating units. Such polymers are either uncharged, e.g., in many actinobacteria and certain bacilli, or are anionic because of the presence of uronic acid, pyruvyl, or succinyl groups. The CWGs play important roles in bacterial physiology and various potential functions, such as control of autolytic enzymes, regulation of divalent cations, attachment of surface proteins, or protection against antibacterial molecules, have been described. In those bacteria that colonize or infect animal hosts, CWGs have been implicated in adherence to host cells and activation of immune responses, e.g., via the toll-like receptors. In addition, CWGs are very important targets for antimicrobials, vaccines, and diagnostics." @default.
- W1000298224 abstract "This article presents an analysis of the moose–forest relationship in Russia characterized by utilization of land by humans and its consequences for moose and the forest. It provide a general overview of the research approaches regarding Russia’s damaged forests by moose. In the early 1950s, the moose population increased sharply, primarily due to enlargement of the cutover area and the ensuing increased forage resource. Devastation to pine and oak are emphasized amid a backdrop of damage to silviculture that cost millions of rubles. Other northern countries were undergoing similar destruction by moose to their forests. Three main research approaches are distinguished: determination of the damage by moose to stands, estimation of the effects of moose on the structure of forest phytocenoses, and the effects of moose on the productivity of particular plant species and forest phytocenoses. This well documented article correlates various moose population densities with specific effects on different ecosystems and emphasizes the fact that trophic activity of moose is one of several factors affecting the structure and succession of forest phytocenoses of various natural zones." @default.
- W1000298608 abstract "This chapter provides a rationale for the design and interpretation of transient kinetic experiments to establish enzyme pathways by direct analysis of individual reaction steps. In many ways, transient kinetics is straightforward and experimental results can be understood in terms of simple principles derived from first-order kinetics. The application of these methods to enzyme kinetics is illustrated by a number of examples. This is especially useful for those cases in which the kinetic data could be fit to a single, complete model, the most notable being 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate (EPSP) synthase, DNA polymerase, and tryptophan synthase. The application of transient kinetic methods to the solution of enzyme mechanisms has increased because of recent advances in instrumentation and in the overexpression and purification of new enzymes. Transient kinetics is becoming the method of choice for the evaluation of site-directed enzyme mutants and for detailed questions regarding the relationships between protein structure and observable function. In conjunction with advances in methods of structural and genetic analyses, transient-state kinetic analysis forms the basis for what might be called the “new enzymology.” The danger in the interpretation of kinetic data stems from the tendency to include an additional reaction step to explain an unusual kinetic result, when often the new result could have been accounted for by a simpler model based on a deeper understanding of the subtleties of the kinetics." @default.

The first paper – entitled Profiling Normative Foreign Policy: The European Union and its Global Partners, by Nathalie Tocci, CEPS Working Document No. 279, December 2007 – set out the conceptual framework for exploring this question. The present paper constitutes one of several case studies applying this framework to the behaviour of the European Union, whereas the others to follow concern China, India, Russia and the United States. A normative foreign policy is rigorously defined as one that is normative according to the goals set, the means employed and the results obtained. Each of these studies explores eight actual case examples of foreign policy behaviour, selected in order to illustrate four alternative paradigms of foreign policy behaviour – the normative, the realpolitik, the imperialistic and the status quo. For each of these four paradigms, there are two examples of EU foreign policy, one demonstrating intended consequences and the other, unintended effects. The fact that examples can be found that fit all of these different types shows the importance of ‘conditioning factors’, which relate to the internal interests and capabilities of the EU as a foreign policy actor as well as the external context in which other major actors may be at work." @default.

Expanded waveform shapes and spectrographic representations of our experimental data showed us immediately that the distinction between the voiceless and voiced syllable-initial plosives could not be traced by means of the usual absence/presence of the voice bar in the spectrograms. This resulted in adopting alternative cues, such as voice onset time (VOT) and closure duration. The use of these acoustic cues allowed us to oppose unambiguously the voiced and voiceless syllable-initial stop consonants in siSwati. At the same time, this experiment permitted us to show the extent to which the voice onset of /bdg/ is delayed in siSwati. Further, this analysis resulted in confirming that voiceless and voiced plosives cannot always be opposed by the status of the glottis during their articulatory closure." @default.

- W1000306395 abstract "We studied iron remobilization and nutrient regeneration in bottom water of Funka Bay, Japan, bimonthly from August 2010 to December 2011. The bay basin (bottom depth, 92–96 m) is separated from the northwest Pacific Ocean at its mouth by a sill with a depth of 60 m. After a spring phytoplankton bloom during early March–early April, nutrients in bay bottom water tended to accumulate with time until August–September, and to increase gradually with depth during April–October, by the oxidative decomposition of settling particulate organic matter on the bay bottom. In contrast, the process of iron remobilization into bottom water of the bay is remarkably different from nutrient regeneration. The much higher concentrations of dissolved and total dissolvable iron near the bottom and the seasonally variable relationship between dissolved iron concentration and apparent oxygen utilization in bay bottom water likely reflect a balance between dissolved iron input and removal processes within the bay bottom water. The release of soluble Fe(II) from reducing bay sediments might induce the high concentrations of dissolved and total dissolvable iron in deep–bottom waters of Funka Bay and might be one of the most important sources of iron in Funka Bay. The upward transport of iron from the bay bottom to the surface water during the winter vertical mixing may play an important role in the supply of bioavailable iron for phytoplankton growth in the coastal waters." @default.
- W1000306513 abstract "This paper proposes an approach to improve the cost-effectiveness of the control of variable speed drives in the robotics field. This could be achieved by the association of brushless DC motors (BLDCM)with a reduced structure DC/AC converter that is the three-switch inverter (TSI) equipping a robot arm. In a first step, we devoted the analysis, modelisation and control of a three-switch inverter (TSI), also known delta- inverter, fed BLDCM drive. A special attention is paid to the implementation of a dedicated strategy in such a drive and the comparison of its performance with those given by the conventional inverter fed BLDCM drive. A dynamic model and the control of a robot arm have been developed. Finally, simulation results carried out in Matlab-Simulink environment considering the association of both conventional and reduced inverter fed BLDCM drive with a robot arm are treated. Index Terms—BLDCM, control, robot arm, simulation, three- Switch Three-Phase Inverter (TSTPI)." @default.

Average degree of dominance was partial for days to flowering and maturity while over dominance was observed for remaining traits. The positively significant values of h2 further revealed the positive direction of dominant genes for controlling majority of the characters. At least one or more than one group of dominant genes was found active for controlling few characters." @default.

Data integration of rural planning is the base of constructing a data center and application platform all over the country. A 7-layer framework of data integration of rural planning is designed in the paper on the base of analyzing the features of data of rural planning, such as distributed, of different frequency, from multiple sources and multi-semantic, referencing to the SIG 7 layers architecture and adopting the idea of service based of OGSA. Also the service mechanism and mixed deployment mode of data integration are studied in the paper in detail. The architecture has a characteristic of “general management, local autonomy”, so it has the heterogeneous data integrated with great efficiency and high extensibility." @default.

Any company that does not configure a strong security infrastructure is literally putting the company at risk. This chapter addresses the complex issues involved in planning a certificate-based PKI and provides an overview of the basic terminology and concepts relating to the public key infrastructure. Through this chapter, one can learn about public key cryptography and how it is used to authenticate the identity of users, computers, and applications/services. In addition, there is further discussion on different components of PKI, including private key, public key, and a trusted third party (TTP) along with PKI enhancements in Windows Server 2008. It also discusses the role of digital certificates and the different types of certificates (user, machine, and application certificates). PKI is the method of choice for handling authentication issues in large enterprise level organizations. Windows Server 2008 includes the tools one requires to create a PKI for company and issue digital certificates to users, computers, and applications." @default.

This theory proposes that genetic material from non-parental ancestors is used to restore genetic information that was inadvertently corrupted during reproduction. We evaluate the effectiveness of this strategy by adapting it to an evolutionary algorithm solving two distinct benchmark optimization problems. We compare the performance of the proposed strategy with a number of alternate strategies – including the Mendelian alternative. Included in this comparison are a number of biologically implausible templates that help elucidate likely reasons for the relative performance of the different templates. Results show that the proposed nonMendelian restoration strategy is highly effective across the range of conditions investigated – significantly outperforming the Mendelian alternative in almost every situation." @default.

- W1000310565 abstract "Banks have an important role in the process of building up and functioning of capital markets. It is generally known that the capital market can not be developed without the increase of financial saving. Our country should make legal regulations which provide transparent, open, economical and efficient capital market. Passing stock market law and other financial instruments brought to important development in building up of capital market. Legal position of banks is regulated by a regulation of banks and other financial organizations from 1993. For better determination of place and function of banks at capital market, new law of banks is needed to be made. At capital market long-term stocks market is developing. Those are shares and long-term stocks. In comparable law there is division of banks on investment and commercial (deposits). In our law there is no division of that kind. In our country banks can carry out wide range of jobs which directly or indirectly affect offer and demand at capital market. Banks can be participants at primary and secondary capital market. At primary market, banks perform jobs that are connected with issuing and first sale and purchase of stocks. At secondary market, banks carry out broker and dealer jobs. Broker mediate in commerce with securities, buying and selling securities on behalf of himself, on the account of instructing party. Dealer buys and sells securities on behalf of his name and on his account in order to achieve price difference. If the bank could carry out broker - dealer jobs it has to get previous accord of Central Bank and permission of Securities and Exchange Commission for the stocks. Except those broker dealer jobs, banks at the capital market can act as market makers, portfolio managers, issuing sponsors, investment advisers. New legal regulative make good preconditions for successful development of capital market in our country." @default.

This was then used to reflect on how artists and galleries in the UK could sustain themselves amid funding cuts. The research was conducted in Collaboration with ChatterJee and Lal Gallery and focused on gathering data and personal experiences of galleries based in Mumbai. Mumbai was chosen as it is the economic heart of India and represents a platform for research based on galleries that sustain themselves purely on private investment. In tandem with the research we organised a Rednile Projects ‘Factory Nights’. These events focus on bringing creative practitioners together in unusual and often hard to access spaces. With respect to the major causes of death, in the United States and most developed countries, cancer accounts for about one-sixth of all deaths. For this reason, even the most plausible small to moderate benefits of antioxidant vitamins - - risk reductions of 20-30% - - could have a substantial public health impact. At present, however, antioxidant vitamins represent a promising, but unproven, means to prevent cancer. This paper reviews current evidence on antioxidants and cancer and describes ongoing large-scale randomized trials that will provide needed additional data on this question." @default.

Utilizing the software, the 3D CT reconstructions of the pelves were completed. Setting the transparency being high, the pelvic 3D reconstructions were manipulated from the pelvic anteroposterior view to the combined obturator oblique outlet view and fine-tuned till the regular Teepee-or teardrop-shaped appearance emerges. Cutting tools of the software were at the moment applied to separate the Teepee from the main pelvis for each reconstruction. Then the Teepee and the rest (main) part of the pelvis were displayed in different color to facilitate the analysis on the Teepee, iliac-oblique, and anteroposterior views. The Teepee started from the posterolateral aspect of the anterior inferior iliac spine and finished at the cortex between the posterior superior iliac spine and the posterior inferior iliac spine in a direction of being from caudal-anterior-lateral to cranial-posterior-medial. The radiographic anatomical composition of the Teepee contained one tip, one base, and two aspects. With the inner and outer iliac tables being the inner and outer aspects of the Teepee, the tip is consequently formed by their intersection. The base is imaged from the cortex of the greater sciatic notch. The medial-inferior-posterior portion of the Teepee contains a small part of sacroiliac joint and its corresponding side of bone of the sacrum. The Teepee is a zone of ample osseous structures of the pelvis, aside from a small medial-inferior-posterior portion, the main zone of which can be accepted as a safe osseous zone for the anchor of implants stabilizing certain pelvic and acetabular fracture patterns. The Teepee view can be utilized as guidance for the safe percutaneous insertion of such implants." @default.

- W1000312985 abstract "We demonstrate controlled manipulation of large quantities of microparticles on a surface using inertial forces. Motion is induced by applying a periodic parabolic wave form to a shear-polarized piezoelectric plate coupled to a substrate on which the particles reside. Particles move in steps of 10 to 50 nm per cycle, and the particle motion is mass selective. Particle velocity is varied by changing the frequency of the wave form. Calculated inertial forces acting on the particles correspond closely to friction forces between individual microparticles and the substrate, as measured by coupling an individual particle to an atomic force microscope. The results provide insight into the characteristics of particle-surface interactions, and demonstrate the potential for controlled manipulation and separation of large collections of particles without the need for a fluid medium." @default.

- W1000314158 abstract "HvALMT1 encodes a malate transporter responsible for malic acid efflux in barley on 2H. The gene was characterized to contribute to anion homeostasis and stomatal adjustment. However, it has been debated for some time whether the gene function is related to Al tolerance. We developed thirty-six pairs of primers covering whole gene sequence and tested polymorphisms in 335 accessions with different Al tolerance. Phenotypic variation was evaluated in native acid soil and limed acid soil. Ten pairs of primers (4 in the upstream region, 6 in the coding region,) showed polymorphisms. Stepwise regression analysis revealed one gene-specific marker, UA21, was significantly correlated with phenotypic variation of root length in acid soil (r = 0.301, p < 0.01) and relative root length (root length in acid soil compared with that in acid soil treated with lime) (r = 0.246, p < 0.01). The results demonstrated that malate transporter gene may play a role for acids soil tolerance in some of the germplasm." @default.
- W10003144 abstract "Abstract Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis is the most widespread mutualistic association. It concerns 80% of land plants and involves fungi belonging to the phylum Glomeromycota. Benefits to the host plants due to this symbiosis range from nutrient supply to protection against pathogens. AM fungi are important components of the soil microbiome and are of great interest for managing sustainable agriculture, provided that their life cycle is better understood. Recently, major advances in the genomics of the model AM fungus Rhizophagus irregularis DAOM197198 have been published, offering new tools to investigate the biology of this symbiosis. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the efforts that were necessary to reach these results, from the discovery of these fungi and the description of their mutualistic incidence to their in vitro cultivation and on to genomics. The genome of DAOM197198 is estimated at ca. 150 Mb. It is haploid and less polymorphic than expected. Although it is an obligate biotrophic fungus, very little gene loss was observed. We put the Rhizophagus gene repertoire in perspective with previous investigations performed on the physiology of AM fungi: germination, early signalling with host plants, plant invasion, metabolism (phosphorous, carbon and nitrogen) and sexuality. Clearly, the publication of the genome of R. irregularis DAOM197198 is a turning point in the study of AM fungi, and large areas of their biology that still remain to be elucidated will now become accessible for investigation." @default.
- W1000314492 abstract "Pressure drop is an important parameter for designing and operating a hydrocyclone. High pressure drop leads to excessive consumption of energy, while too low pressure drop may affect the hydrocyclone efficiency. The objectives of this research were to investigate the parameters that affected the pressure drop of a 50-mm hydrocyclone, namely, underflow diameter, overflow diameter, inlet diameter, feed flow rate and feed concentration; a model that can be used to predict the pressure drop was also proposed. All possible regression methods were used for selecting the best set of parameters that affected the pressure drop. The results showed that the underflow diameter, overflow diameter, inlet diameter and feed flow rate were the set of parameters that mostly affected the pressure drop of the hydrocyclone. The regression model could predict the pressure drop of the hydrocyclone well when compared with the experimental results with the coefficient of determination, R2 and mean square error, MSE of 0.9802 and 0.0009, respectively." @default.
- W1000315126 abstract "In chapter 3 of this book it was pointed out that structuralist studies of narration typically study the text as object, looking for structures and relations within the text. In contrast, post-structuralist studies of narration typically focus on the text in relation to the subject, the subjectivity of the one who is interpreting or producing the text. Thus post-structuralist studies are usually concerned with ideology, with the assumptions of what is ‘natural’ and ‘normal’ to the subject in producing meaning. Post-structuralist studies of narration, then, focus on the ideological orientation of narrative. What stories are told? What stories are repressed? In whose interests is it to tell particular stories, or to repress them? And so on." @default.

Polyethylene oxides (PEO) and their derivatives are of definite interest among macromolecular surfactants. The structure of cathodic metal deposits is improved and formation of dendritic deposits is hindered in presence of PEO; this is important for prolonged and stable operation of galvanic cells. The mechanism of interaction of PEO and its derivatives with electrode surfaces by controlled changes in active groups of the molecules was determined. The influence of the surfactants on the cathode and anode processes on zinc and cadmium was investigated. It was concluded that the characteristics of batteries with zinc and cadmium electrodes can be improved considerable and their life lengthened by the use of polymers based on PEO." @default.
