- W100044546 abstract "Publisher Summary The scale of the geometric enterprise in the second half of the 19th century cannot be doubted. This chapter discusses the geometrical theory of curves and surfaces. Riemann took the view that any two-dimensional patch could be the domain of functions of a complex variable. Riemann was able to produce his estimate of the number of analytical functions with a specified number of simple poles a given surface can support, the so-called Riemann inequality. This essay indicated some of the methods by which geometrical questions were pursued and indeed how questions in analysis were interpreted in geometrical ways. The importance of the interaction between geometry and analysis was something that all the protagonists stressed, not that they would have disclaimed the relevance of synthetic geometry. However, they were all believers in the unity of mathematics. Personal predilection coupled with formal training in an established tradition is a powerful combination, and it worked well for over half a century." @default.
