- W100208285 abstract "UNIVERSITY OF TAMPERE School of Health Sciences Nursing Science KATARIINA SAARELA: Surgical patient education as experienced by the advanced practice nurse Master’s thesis, 94 pages, 6 appendices Supervisors: MNSc Mira Palonen and PhD, professor Paivi Astedt-Kurki April 2013 Studies in health science have overlooked the experiences of the advanced practice nurses in surgical patient education. The purpose of this thesis is to describe surgical counselling from the viewpoint of the advanced practice nurse. In this study, the term advanced practice nurse (APN) refers to a registered nurse who has completed additional training and who has a separately specified work description. The work description of APNs differs from that of other nurses, for instance, in that it entails reception of patients conducted by the nurses as well as more intensive patient counselling. The aim of this study is to plan and further develop surgical patient education on the basis of the knowledge produced. The data of the study consists of essays written by APNs (n=16) working in surgical counselling in their independent practices within the specific catchment area of one university hospital. The data was analyzed with inductive content analysis. The study resulted in a description of surgical counselling and of the factors influencing patient education from the viewpoint of the APN. The APNs’ experiences of patient education were crystallized into counselling that aimed at patients’ overall empowerment. It was a patient-driven compilation of those factors required by each patient for their overall empowerment in their specific situation in life. In order to enable the patients’ overall empowerment through counselling, the APN needed specific subfields of patient education command that affected the APN’s experience of being able to command surgical patient education. By means of content analysis, the study reached a theoretical outcome that depicts an interactive and dynamic counselling process as a means to achieve quality patient education. Each part of this counselling process manifests dynamism; the possibility of constant change. In today’s nursing culture, patient education should be systematic, carefully planned and highly developed. It should cover all the areas of patient education management and strive towards patients’ overall empowerment. The interactive and dynamic counselling process that is described in this study is suitable to be applied in theories of nursing science or in practical nursing, either in part or in its entirety and, if necessary, completed with other compatible elements. The results of this study can be used in the planning, development and enhancement of patient education in the operative units of hospitals and other, similar nursing contexts. Moreover, the results may be used in the further education of APNs and its development. Further research is needed on the counselling provided by APNs from the viewpoint of the patients and their families." @default.
