- W100321743 abstract "Increasing energy demands, limited source of fossil fuel, and concern of global warming have motivated the usage of renewable sources for fuel, chemicals and materials. As the production of biofuel continues to grow, more by-products (ranging from upstream, discarded feedstock components to downstream, postproduction residues) are generated, which call for more research and engineering efforts for their effective utilization. For economic viability, it is imperative that biorefineries extract or create values from as many feedstock components as possible, to make valuable or value-added coproducts together with the main biofuel or biochemical products. Among the existing or potential coproducts of bioenergy or biorefinery, various phytochemicals are useful as dyes, pigments, bioactive agents, or other materials of industrial interests. This chapter presents a brief overview on the conventional (co)production of industrial phytochemicals in staple crops processing, and on the research efforts in incorporating phytochemicals in the emergent bioenergy products portfolio." @default.
