- W100458571 abstract "The vestibulo–ocular reflex (VOR) produces eye movements in the direction opposite to head movement, thus serving to automatically stabilize vision relative to space. VOR displays a remarkable capability of adaptation. It modifies its dynamics so as to secure visual stability under any circumstance in which mismatched movements of the head and the visual surroundings impair visual stability. Anatomical studies of neuronal connections and physiological analyses of impulse signals generated by Purkinje cells have revealed that the major site of this adaptation resides in evolutionarily the oldest area of the cerebellum, namely the flocculus, though a contribution of brainstem pathways has also been considered. The flocculus hypothesis that the adaptiveness of the VOR is due to long-term depression (LTD) in Purkinje cells induced by retinal error signals now receives a strong support from the observations that pharmacological or genetic inhibition of LTD results in the loss of VOR adaptation." @default.
