- W1005031808 abstract "In hemoglobin (Hb) and myoglobin (Mb), the globin chain has a globular and compact conformation, and the protoporphinato-iron (protoheme) group is embedded in the pocket of the globular protein. The heme coordinately bonds to the imidazole ring of the F8-His residue within the pocket-forming segment of the globin and becomes the oxygen-binding site. The active site is completely surrounded by hydrophobic residues of the globin chain; this aids the formation of an oxygen adduct that is stable to irreversible oxidation through a proton-driven process. In the heme pocket, very polar groups within van der Waals distances are present around the coordination site and form a suitable polar environment for oxygen binding. If the oxygen-binding site, the protoheme, is isolated from Hb and Mb and exposed to oxygen in a solution, the heme complex is immediately and irreversibly oxidized to its ferric [Fe(III)] state and does not act as an oxygen transporter." @default.
