• W100521153 abstract "Abstract Firms in which members of a family have significant influence over the business are referred to as family firms. This influence may be exerted through family involvement in the management and/or ownership of a business. Although family involvement in a firm distinguishes these firms from other organizational forms, not all family firms are alike as they vary significantly, among other aspects, in terms of the extent and mode of family involvement. Until now, however, family firms have largely been treated as a single entity leading to the question whether research findings from one type of family firms can be applied to another type. A starting point for understanding the extent of generalizability of research findings in this literature is to develop a basis for distinguishing family firms from other organizational forms, and among various types of family firms. Using the well-established overlapping three-circles model, each circle representing family membership, ownership, and managerial roles of internal family firm stakeholders, this article develops stakeholder-mapping technique. This technique, in turn, is used to identify 72 distinct non-overlapping categories of firms with varying amount of family involvement in the business. The developed typology is used to understand the types of governance mechanisms that will aid in enhancing performance of different types of firms.
