The assumption of separate chains is reasonable considering the membrane-bound nature of the components. Consideration of the membrane-bound nature of the components is an important aspect in the development of the kinetic treatment presented in the chapter. The particular application of this treatment is the determination of the time course of the electron–transfer reactions, immediately following illumination, between plastoquinone and the initially oxidized components of the photosystem I complex. One result of the theoretical treatment presented in the chapter is that the delay predicted for the reduction of cytochrome f is much shorter than that predicted by Haehnel and consistent with the data of Whitmarsh and Cramer. In addition, the calculation predicts the rate of cytochrome f dark reduction relative to the rate-limiting step. Comparison of the theoretically predicted values with those determined experimentally indicates that the measured half-time for dark reduction of cytochrome f related to that of the rate-limiting step is longer than that indicated by the simplest application of the model." @default.
