- W1007148800 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter presents a discussion on the characterization of ion solvation in aqueous and nonaqueous solutions. Characterization of electric charges of complex macromolecules is also discussed in the chapter, because such objects can be considered as large ions. Ultrasound provides a unique means for studying ions in liquids and, in particular, their interaction with liquid molecules. The chapter discusses these methods for aqueous solution, for nonaqueous solutions, and for complex charged biomolecules. Interaction of ions' electric charges with water molecules' dipole moment leads to the formation of structured water layers around ions. The “coordination number” is the total number of water molecules that are in contact with an ion. “Solvation number” represents the number of molecules that remain associated with the ion during its movement through the solution. Ultrasound offers a way of measuring electric charges of proteins and other biomolecules. This can be done either directly or by adsorbing biomolecules on mineral particles with higher density contrast. Electroacoustic measurement of protein charges has a major advantage from the sample handling viewpoint. This method does not apply an electric field to the protein solution, which is known as one of the drawbacks of microelectrophoresis." @default.
