- W1007288362 abstract "The approach to understanding behavior for managing current and avoiding future disease emphasizes the distinction between problem solving or environmental regulation, self-regulation, and construction of the self. Creating new identities and altering old ones, and adding and modifying procedures for problem solving are not the typical reactions to confrontations with illness. Most illnesses are time limited and managed with an available repertoire of treatments. Reconstruction of the self begins when illness poses novel problems, and extensive redefinition of the self is more likely for illnesses that are represented and experienced both as highly disruptive and long lasting. The goal-directed processes involved in adaptation to illness, whether goals are set by the self or by experts and involve or do not involve reconstruction of the self, are heavily influenced by the biological properties of the disease (for example, level of pain, functional disability, visibility of damage) and by individual and societal models of the disease process." @default.
