- W100940595 abstract "INTRODUCTION Upon his nomination for the presidency of the African Studies Association (ASA) in April of 2004, the following is part of what Mwalimu Toyin Falola wrote about himself in his Statement of Candidacy: I have a strong record of working with others on boards of journals, academic organizations, and a host of other associations. I have worked in executive capacities in other associations, including serving as the General Secretary of the Historical Society of Nigeria and been a member of the Joel Gregory Prize Committee for the Canadian Association of African Studies. For many years now, it has been my privilege to contribute to the development of the ASA. For three years, I served on the National Program Committee (as Chair in 1996). This year, I am also serving as a member, responsible for the theme Urban Spaces in Africa: Past Memories and Present Communities. (1) After reading on the USA-Africa Dialogue listserv the news item about Mwalimu Falola being awarded a Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa, from Monmouth University on May 16, 2007, the following is part of what Professor Tony Agbali wrote in response: Congratulations to a very dear friend and prominent Africanist, humanist, poet, and a rare gem, whose sterling qualities of humility and astute commitment to duty, even going beyond the bound of the ordinary continues to stir some of us to strive harder in spite of steering hardship. Professor Falola has done and continues to do an amazing job in vivifying the rich historical, cultural, social and economic tapestries that define Africa. A very jovial and humorous person, he has through his scholarship continued to represent Africa to the world, not only to intellectuals but to all those interested in Africa. (2) Professor Agbali also paid his tribute in honor of Mwalimu Falola with the following poem: (3) Ode to the Scion of Warriors The Oke of Ibadan are singing They are dancing They are jumping In the great shout and hullulations of a beloved son, the scion of Ibadan To a great son of Isola The mitre of excellence Continues to flow In perpetual flux, the warriors' blood Floats, indomitably questing for excellence Toyin drums the soul of IbadanAll over the talking-drums echo And the wanderer dances To Ilorin, he goes and return But his restless spirit forages He is a warrior Adorning a soldier's spirit His conquest beyond Ilorin Thrusts him into the Tejano's land Yet, he would not bury his spirit He is a forager, he will drink of the Colorado He will stir destiny in its face, He will hold the horn to defeat the bullocks And to trumpet the glory of Ibadan He will not only remember the Alamo He remembers his roots, bringing honor home He's the soldier Whose conquests revive Ibadan's drooping soul The true scion is a son of progress His dances of triumph, make the Oke smile Isola, here is your kolanut Isola, here is your drink A scion of the land Makes the ancestors happy And in merriment, your blessings continue Toyin dance, dance The ancestors have drank From your cup Because your hands are clean And your spirit pure, your blessings are countless What follows is part of what Professor Tokunbo Ayoola wrote on the listserv upon reading the news about the honorary doctorate degree awarded to Mwalimu Falola: Professor Toyin Falola deserves all the honors that are coming his way. He is hardworking, talented and determined. Of particular importance has been the way and manner he has been supporting upcoming scholars. He is very generous with his time and resources. (4) Adding to the chorus of celebrants, the following is part of what Professor Michael O. Afolayan wrote: What a beautiful picture. It tells it all! The words of the Philosopher King Solomon are true: Have you seen a person who is diligent in his work? …" @default.
