- W1009968783 abstract "Publisher Summary Halobacteria is a commonly used term comprising all species of the order Halobacteriales. Members of this group prefer extreme environments, which is typical of archaebacteria in general. In addition to the bioenergetic functions of fermentation and electron transport, the halobacteria possess a unique system of photosynthesis not found in other archaebacteria or in eukaryotes. Halorhodopsin is an inwardly directed light-driven chloride pump, which in co-operation with potassium uniport, mediates the net salt uptake by the cells, which is required for growth. The light-independent re-isomerization to the all-trans state is catalyzed by the protein and thermodynamically driven by part of the photon's energy, which has been stored in the protein conformation. The major differences between the pumps and the sensors are a longer lifetime of the intermediate 13- cis state of the sensors and the connection of ion release and binding to cis-trans isomerization in the pumps. Photomovement as a tool to locate optimal conditions for photosynthesis is not the only tactic behavior that halobacteria can master. The cells respond to many more positive and negative stimuli than light alone. Examples found are, chemotaxis, aerotaxis, and presumably, thermotaxis." @default.
