- W1010643505 abstract "Publisher Summary β-Mannosidase is a glycosidase that cleaves single D-mannosyl residues from the nonreducing end of β-l,4-1inked D-mannooligosaccharides and similarly linked sugar glycosides. This chapter discusses commercially available gut solution of Helix pomatia, which is a very useful source of β-mannosidase. The level of activity in the crude solution is high and the enzyme can be obtained readily in an almost homogeneous form by three simple chromatographic steps. The most convenient assay for β-mannosidase activity employs p -nitrophenyl-β-D-mannopyranoside as substrate and measures the rate of cleavage of glycosidic bonds by the rate of release of p -nitrophenol. The chapter discusses the purification procedure and properties of β-D-mannosidase from Helix pornatia . Snail β-D-mannosidase is particularly useful in the characterization of the D-galactose containing mannoollgosacchandes produced by acid or enzymic hydrolysis of galactomannans. This enzyme, together with α-galactosidase and endo-β-D-mannanase, can be used to characterize the structures of more complex oligosaccharides." @default.
