- W1010969845 abstract "A chloroplast is surrounded by an envelope consisting of two membranes, the inner and the outer envelope membrane. Because of a porin, the outer envelope membrane is unspecifically permeable to solutes up to a molecular weight of 10,000, whereas the inner envelope membrane is the osmotic barrier and thus the site of specific metabolite transport. Chloroplasts are the site of photosynthesis in a plant. By utilizing the energy from the sun's radiation, the chloroplasts fix CO2 in order to supply the plant cell with substrates required for maintenance and growth. The main substrate delivered from the chloroplasts is dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP). The provision of DHAP by the chloroplasts requires a transfer of water, CO2 and inorganic phosphate (Pi) across the envelope into the chloroplasts, and an outward transfer of DHAP. This chapter summarizes the present knowledge on chloroplast transport processes." @default.
