- W101206668 abstract "Shula Marks reminds us, is smallest and least politically influential of the four provinces of what became the Union of South in 1910 {The Ambiguities of Dependence 10). This state of affairs, noted here by one of the region's most influential historians, has not surprisingly been reflected in the histories of South Africa. The editors of Natal and Zululand: A New History comment upon the fact that it was not until 1965 that any substantial historical works on south-east were produced. In doing so they even Gnd it necessary to point out that this is because the region has been greatly neglected, and not because it deserves to be as an unimportant sideshow in the history of Southern Africa (Duminy and Guest xvii). South African literary history has taken a similar shape. The country's most famous novel may well begin and end in the obscure valley of Ndotsheni in Natal, but the bulk of its action must migrate to Johannesburg to be of significance. Literary reputation too, regardless of its region of origin, must prove capable of migrating to the metropolitan centres to be established. The work of the novelist who may best lay claim to being the Natal writer has, until recently, not been deemed worthy of such recruitment. Daphne of whom a Guardian reviewer in the mid-sixties wrote, Gordimer, Lessing, and the greatest of these is Rooke, has, until the recent Chameleon Press re-issue of some of her books, been all but dismissed or ignored by the South African literary establishment. It is of at least passing significance for my argument here that her most popular and famous work, Mittee (first published in 1951 and recently reissued in the Penguin Classics series), is not set in Natal; this despite the fact that a case can be made for seeing as the core of her real achievement as a writer a set of four novels intimately" @default.
