- W101321344 abstract "The potential of coal slurry pipelines in the United States creates exciting probabilities for many long-length, large-diameter projects. The anticipated large increase in coal production during the next two decades will come principally from surface mines located in western states with relatively low population. Major markets for this coal are the populous industrialized areas located hundreds of miles from the mines, and the slurry pipeline provides an economic and environmentally attractive way to provide part of the cross-country transportation need. Two successful lines that have operated in the U.S. are described--the Black Mesa and the Ohio slurry lines. Although any major slurry pipeline project faces many technical problems, it is the environmental and political hurdles that are in the forefront of today's efforts to proceed with numerous projects. A community accepts the fact that nature moves water from one geographical area to another, but most often there is opposition to any effort by industry to remove a significant quantity of water from the local area. However, a slurry pipeline requires less water per ton of coal than either a mine-mouth power generating plant or a coal conversion plant. Federal legislation granting right of eminent domain also is essential to themore » acquisition of necessary right of way for proposed U.S. projects. The economic advantages of coal slurry pipelines are discussed. (MCW)« less" @default.
