- W1013691200 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter deals with the contradictory issues and parables associated with the intelligent environments. The logical paradox of intelligent environments is—there are intelligent beings, not intelligent environments. Even assuming that one could create a being that one inhabited, the only way one could guarantee his or her host's behavior would be to enslave it, befriend it, and limit its capacity to decide or act or engender a symbiosis through the complete convergence of interests. The intelligent environments are a logical and moral nonsense, and that what is meant by proponents of such is the rapid and ubiquitous extension of certain robotic technologies into the built environment to make the lives better. The term intelligent environments has become a kind of shorthand for the integrated application of a variety of sensing, computational, tele-communicational, and mechatronic technologies in design and construction in the hope of finally realizing the modernist dream of buildings as “living machines.”" @default.
