- W101396477 abstract "Background: Chronic otitis media (COM) has assumed a worldwide importance. In the developing countries, its prevalence is up to 72 cases per 1000 population constituting a heavy disease burden. Hearing loss is one of the most common complaint for which patients with COM seek medical attention. The conductive hearing impairment as well as sensorineural impairment resulting from this condition has been well acknowledged in the literature. The question is 'what is the effect of this disease on the cochlear function of patients with squamous and mucosal type of chronic otitis media'. An analysis of this can help to bridge the gap in the current literature. Aims & Objectives: To study the pattern and severity of sensorineural hearing loss in mucosal versus squamous COM and to find out its relation with the duration of the disease. Materials & Methods: It was a cross sectional study conducted in a medical college hospital. 30 cases each of mucosal and squamous chronic otitis media with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) were studied during a period of 2 years, from November 2012 to December 2014. The patients satisfying our inclusion criteria were selected for the study. They underwent a detailed history taking, thorough clinical examination and pure tone audiometry. Data obtained was statistically analyzed. Results: To obtain 30 cases each of SNHL in mucosal and squamous COM patients, we had to screen 378 patients of mucosal COM and 259 patients of squamous COM. The prevalence of SNHL in mucosal COM was found to be 7.93% and that in squamous COM was 11.58%. A positive correlation was found between the patient's age and the occurrence of SNHL (p = 0.028) in both the groups. But no correlation was noted between gender, side of COM or duration of COM and SNHL in either of the two groups, the probability being 0.60, 0.79 and 0.24 respectively. A positive correlation was also noted between low socioeconomic status and SNHL prevalence. On comparison, there was significant difference in prevalence and degree of SNHL occurring in squamous COM and mucosal COM (p = < 0.01). Conclusion: SNHL develops as a sequel to both mucosal and squamous COM. Its incidence increases as the age of the patients increases. There is no relation of gender of the patients, side of COM or duration to the occurrence of SNHL. Lower socioeconomic group were more likely to develop SNHL in COM. The prevalence of SNHL was higher in squamous COM which was statistically significant." @default.
