- W101398450 abstract "E?a de Queiroz once wrote that his novels would never attain interna tional renown because he wrote in a language ? Portuguese ? which was a slang between two peoples ? the Portuguese and the Brazilians. For many years, his prophecy proved quite accurate. In the English-speaking world, he was a complete literary unknown until the 1950s, when trans lations of his works appeared. Twen tieth-century Luzo-Brazilian poets faced a similar fate. However, owing to the growing international interest in Brazil, the new popularity of bilingual editions and several dedicated propo nents of Luso-Brazilian culture, the best Portuguese and Brazilian poetry of the last fifty years is now available in English. In 1971 a bilingual edition of selected poems of Fernando Pessoa appeared and in 1972 a bilingual an thology of Brazilian poetry since 1922 was published. Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935) is considered Portugal's greatest twen tieth-century poet. Although he was only recently discovered, he has already attained a prestigious status among European poets. The bulk of his verse is in Portuguese, however, he wrote numerous poems in English, which he learned as a child in South Africa. Selected Poems ? Fernando Pessoa (Austin: University of Texas Press, 1971) [Edinburgh Bilingual Library (4)] is Pessoa's first major appearance in English translation and it is indeed a fine bilingual tribute to him. This edition was prepared by Dr. Peter Rickard of Emmanuel Col lege, Cambridge, who also translated the poetry. Dr. Rickard's Introduc is an informative presentation of Pessoa's life and works, as well as an admirably scholarly contribu tion to Pessoan studies. The biogra phy includes a pertinent discussion of Pessoa's markedly introverted person ality, which the author believes to be a clue, but not the key, to undestand ing Pessoa's poetry. Further, the rather complex literary relationship between Pessoa and his three het eronyms ? Ricardo Reis, Alberto Caeiro and Alvaro de Campos ? is lucidly explained and evaluated. Dr. Rickard's brief section on the English poems focuses on several influences in Pessoa's literary personality, which provide a clearer comprehension of the Portuguese poems. He also in cludes a Note on the Translations, in which he comments on the diffi culties encountered in achieving an accurate and faithful rendition of the poems, owing to the grammatical con structions unique to the Portuguese language and to Pessoa's own multiple styles. We found few verses about which we might have serious disagree ment with Dr. Rickard." @default.
