- W1014007671 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the psychological and neurophysiological factors in stimulus-response (S-R) compatibility. The term S-R compatibility is potentially applicable to a very wide range of situations in which responses have to be made to stimuli. The studies of S-R compatibility have tended to be concerned with the speed and accuracy of performance for situations in which spatial or semantic properties of stimuli and responses do or do not correspond. The compatibility-incompatibility of S-R relations is defined by the parameters of skilled performance, which include faster, more accurate performance that is resistant to fatigue and distraction and generalizes to other tasks commensurately with their degree of similarity. It is found that whether in theoretical or applied S-R compatibility studies, a stimulus is the information conveyed by the experimental materials or the real-life control-display arrangements. This information may include a number of response possibilities or tendencies. It is found that performance was facilitated when the same logical process could be applied to both attributes of the stimulus." @default.
