• W101418863 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the utilization of poor-quality roughages, whether it be dry standing feed or cash-crop residues. In many parts of the world, the pastoral areas are subjected to periods of low rainfall during which the pasture is dry, fibrous, unpalatable, and seriously deficient in nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, salt, vitamin A, available carbohydrates, and possibly in certain trace minerals and in other nutrients not yet identified. Animals cannot survive when they have to subsist entirely on any kind of roughage of this nature. In those countries where beef production is an economically sound proposition, it would pay dividends to rectify all these deficiencies to convert that type of roughage into a production ration. On the other hand, where the profit in the production of beef is marginal, supplementary feeding is usually provided only to ensure survival or at the most maintenance until the next growing season when the natural pasture provides most of the nutritional requirements of livestock both in quantity and quality. The basic concept in the utilization of poor-quality roughages is to use a supplement designed to contain adequate nutrients to nourish the billions of microorganisms to maintain an active population in the rumen for the digestion of the fibrous feeds. Ruminants have the ability to convert grass and other roughage into meat. Cheap and otherwise useless feed is changed into a durable product. This process is coupled with numerous reactions of which those in the rumen are preeminent. Without these reactions, the ruminant would be unable to make better use of roughage than monogastric animals." @default.
