- W1015296977 abstract "Progress in the understanding of the metabolic activation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons has resulted from studies in which photon counting spectrophotofluorimetry has been used to examine the hydrocarbon-DNA adducts formed when polycyclic hydrocarbons are applied either to mouse skin in vivo or to hamster embryo cells in culture. The results obtained in these studies have assisted in identifying the hydrocarbon metabolites that are involved in the covalent binding of BP [1], MBA [2], DMBA and MC [3] to nucleic acids (for a review, see [4]) and were consistent with the suggestion [5] that metabolic activation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons occurs through the formation of vicinal diol-epoxides that possess an epoxide group adjacent to a “bay-region”. In the initial studies, unhydrolysed DNA in solution was examined for evidence of the presence of hydrocarbon moieties. However, under these conditions it is difficult to remove contaminating fluorescent material and the interactions of the hydrocarbon moiety with DNA induce a partial or total loss of the vibrational fine structure of the emission spectrum, which causes difficulties in interpretation." @default.
