- W1016264562 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview of the machinery responsible for postsynaptic receptor trafficking. The chapter introduces postsynaptic anatomy and specializations of dendritic spines, the cytoskeleton, and the internal membrane compartments involved in receptor trafficking with an emphasis on glutamatergic synapses. The secretory pathway is composed of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), the ER-Golgi intermediate compartment (ERGIC), the Golgi apparatus, and the trans-Golgi network (TGN). These large, membrane-bound structures are integral to receptor trafficking and necessary for protein synthesis, processing, sorting, and targeting to the plasma membrane. Proteins typically pass through these organelles in a sequential manner, and transport from one compartment to the next is provided by vesicular intermediates along the microtubule cytoskeleton. The chapter discusses these various membrane domains and membrane compartments through which neurotransmitter receptors traffic during their lifetime. Emphasis is placed on how such membrane compartments, though present in other cell types, have evolved neuron-specific features that allow for dynamic trafficking to and from central nervous system (CNS) synapses." @default.
