- W10164702 abstract "This paper reponts the development of /sup 59/Ni as an excitation source for the x-ray fluorescence of carbon and low-alloy steels. The /sup 59/Ni has a half-life of 60,000 years and emits only Co xrays. The feasibility of transportable energy dispersive Si(Li) systems for data accumulation and reduction in the field is demonstrated. The technique presented can measure the Mn concentration in carbon steels with two single channel analyzers and sealers which accumulate the data from a Si(Li) spectrometer. With this technique an analysis can be performed within 60 sec with an uncertainty (2 sigma ) of <0.08% Mn with the present instrument and no data processing is required. Also, the technique presented measures the V, Cr, and Mn concentrations of carbon or lowalloy steels with a Si(Li) spectrometer connected to a computerbased multichannel analyzer. Presently, the three-element data accumulation and analysis requires about 15 min and determines all three element percent concentrations with an uncentainty (2 sigma ) of <0.04%. However, with a more intense excitation source and a larger area detector, these times can be shortened at least a factor of 40 (or to <25 sec).
