- W1018142522 abstract "This chapter discusses the mechanisms of action of luteinizing hormone (LH), with emphasis on LH-receptor interactions. LH is a glycoprotein and is secreted by the anterior pituitary in the male and female mammal in response to LH-releasing hormone (LHRH) and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus. Its site of action in the male is the Leydig cells in the testis, where it stimulates the production of the male androgen testosterone. In the female, LH interacts with the theca and the granulosa cells and, together with follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), controls the differentiation of the follicles, ovulation, and steroidogenesis. LH is a glycoprotein hormone which like thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), FSH, and chorionic gonadotropins (CGs) contains two non-identical polypeptide chains (α and β). In the ovarian follicular cells there is a continuous change in LH-receptor numbers depending on the stage of the ovarian cycle. FSH seems to be the initial signal for the synthesis of receptors involved in the differentiation of the granulosa cells." @default.
