- W101862008 abstract "This chapter describes the synthesis, uptake, and binding of histamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine in mast cells. In the formation of 5-hydroxytryptamine from the tryptophan by neoplastic mast cells of the mouse, negligible amounts of 5-hydroxytryptophan accumulate, the 5-hydroxytryptophan being decarboxylated as rapidly as it is formed and under usual circumstances the uptake and hydroxylation of tryptophan is the rate-limiting step in the synthesis of 5-hydroxytryptamine. In the formation of 5-hydroxytryptamine from administered 5-hydroxytryptophan, surprisingly large amounts of 5-hydroxytryptophan accumulate in these cells. This persistence of exogenously formed 5-hydroxytryptophan in the cell may rest in part on the fact that the cells can take up 5-hydroxytryptophan more rapidly than they can decarboxylate it and but this explanation is not sufficient, because the exogenous 5-hydroxytryptophan persists for several days whereas the endogenous 5-hydroxytryptophan that produced in the cell, is so rapidly decarboxylated that it can rarely be demonstrated." @default.
