- W101925984 abstract "The provision of teacher education has been of great concern all over the world and there continue to be numerous calls for reform and change. In particular, within the field of foreign language teacher education in Asia, teachers must be prepared to meet the challenges and standards for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Teaching. To do this, one need to take the social contexts of EFL teaching in Asian countries like Bangladesh, Indonesia and Vietnam into account but conducting a critical socio-political analysis of the language teaching environment at the macro level. Several researchers (Duong, 2003; Gorsuch, 2006; Le, 2007a; Nunan, 2003b; Pham, 2001; 2006; Chowdhury & Farooqi,in press) believe that the poor quality of English language teaching in these situations is partly attributable to a lack of sound teacher training and teacher professional development. Although many attempts have been made to improve the quality of teachers in specific contexts, many concerns remain. This symposium brings together three papers that address this issue by focusing on developing alternative strategies for EFL teacher quality improvement in Bangladesh, Indonesia and Vietnam. More specifically, Nguyen’s paper investigates the use of formal peer mentoring process as a complementary strategy for Vietnamese pre-service EFL teachers during their practicum. This study shares that part from being mentored by their school practicum mentors, preservice teachers could learn from one another and mentor one another to assist in the development of their teaching through technique practice. The paper attempts to shed light on the implementaion of formal peer mentoring as a support strategy for the development of higher quality outcomes for the professional practice of EFL beginning teachers. Sunggingwati’s study explores in-service EFL teachers’ participation in a workshop in Indonesia which developed questioning strategies. The workshop helped the teachers develop questioning skills and strategies; it also created an opportunity for them to learn from other teachers. This study underlines what the teachers could learn from focused workshops to improve the quality of teacher education. The findings from these studies are of significance to a variety of educational groups interested in teacher education. This symposium suggests that teacher education should provide opportunities for collaboration, learning at the micro level, reflection on learning experience followed by further inquiry. Information from this symposium should provide ideas and procedures to help improve the quality of current teaching, particularly in the developing countries." @default.
