- W1021750669 abstract "Publisher Summary An alternative approach discussed in this chapter uses aqueous formaldehyde (F) solution, which is believed to be an adequate medium for the initial stage of the histochemical reaction. Its final stage takes place in dried sections and is facilitated by the mounting medium, mineral oil. Thus, the negative effects of unification of reaction conditions seem to be eliminated. In addition, the histochemical reaction is more easily controlled and much less destructive of enzymatic activity than that in the gaseous method. Reaction conditions can be selected within a fairly wide range, according to the aim of the investigation. The results of the investigation reinforce doubts regarding the assumptions on which the uselessness of aqueous F in fluorescence histochemistry of monoamines is generally based. The extreme sensitivity of the F condensation method relies upon the fact that the aldehyde is used in gaseous form. The limitations of the aqueous technique are seemingly connected with chemical peculiarities of some nervous tissues rather than with specificity and sensitivity of the method." @default.
