- W1024939989 abstract "This chapter focuses on electron donation to nitrogenase in heterocysts. Nitrogenase in heterocystous cyanobacteria is confined to specialized cells, heterocysts, under aerobic growth conditions. When the filaments grow in the absence of oxygen or under reduced oxygen tensions, both heterocysts and vegetative cells perform N2 fixation. Cyanobacteria synthesize a [2Fe-2S] ferredoxin and a flavodoxin (the latter only under iron deficiency), and both function as electron carriers in C2H2 reduction of cell-free nitrogenase with comparable efficiencies and independently of each other. The reduction of ferredoxin and the generation of reducing equivalents for N2 fixation in heterocysts is more complicated. These cells do not restrict themselves to a single pathway. This may be because of the fact that heterocysts being unable to perform photosynthetic CO2 fixation are supplied with various carbon compounds from vegetative cells. Among these, monosaccharides are degraded mainly via the hexose monophosphate shunt to glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate, which is further metabolized by glycolysis and the incomplete tricarboxylic acid cycle." @default.
