- W1025804524 abstract "Publisher SummaryNoninvasive techniques are particularly useful for monitoring gas or plasma temperatures. A variety of techniques have, however, been developed based on observing the variation of refractive index, absorption or emission spectroscopy, scattering, fluorescence, and acoustics. Several of these methods have been made possible by the introduction of the laser, improved optics, and high-speed data processing. One of the methods includes refractive index methods. In compressible gas flows, the density varies sufficiently to give measurable results in the variation of the refractive index, and from measurements of this the temperature can be inferred. A number of techniques are available that exploit the variation of refractive index with temperature including the schlieren, shadowgraph, and interferometric methods. The methods of absorption and emission spectroscopy are useful techniques for mapping the temperature distribution in flames and gases at high temperatures. The line reversal method involves viewing a sample of reference gas at a known temperature through a test section containing a sample of gas at an unknown temperature and comparing the spectral line. The CARS (coherent anti-Stokes-Raman scattering) technique permits the noninvasive monitoring of local temperatures in gases, flames, and plasmas. The degenerative four wave mixing (DFWM) method is similar to CARS but uses three input beams. Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) is the optical emission from molecules that have been excited to higher energy levels by the absorption of laser radiation. Acoustic thermography is based on the variation of the speed of sound with temperature in both fluids and solids." @default.
