- W10261008 abstract "Following oral glucose ingestion, circulating glucose peaks after 15–30 min followed by a return to baseline levels after 2–3 h. Elevated postchallenge glucose levels reveal glucose intolerance, which is a risk factor for development of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular complications. A series of metabolic, hormonal, and neural mechanisms contribute to the glucose tolerance. A standardized procedure is to administer 75 g glucose orally, and if the 2-h glucose level exceeds 7.8 mmol l−1, impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) is diagnosed. This entity afflicts an increasing number of people. This article describes the basis for glucose tolerance, methods for its measurements, and epidemiological and clinical aspects of IGT." @default.
