- W1027109933 abstract "This chapter discusses the role of structures located on the surface of the ventrolateral medulla (VLM) in mediating cardiovascular responses to changes in the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the arterial blood. Three chemosensitive regions—a cranial area M, an intermediate area S, and a caudal area L—have been identified whose stimulation by solutions with high PCO2/low pH induce hyperventilation, while superfusion with low PCO2 alkaline solutions induces the opposite effect. Two areas have been identified on the VLM surface that exert important cardiovascular effects: (1) a rostral area located immediately below the inferior border of trapezoid bodies and roughly overlapping with area M and the rostral part of intermediate area S of pH sensitive areas and (2) a caudal area, located laterally to pyramids and 6–9 mm caudal to the trapezoid bodies. Electrical stimulation of the rostral area, the “glycine area,” induces a pressor response, while the application of pentobarbitone or of inhibitory agents, such as glycine or gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), causes a fall in blood pressure. CO2 produces conflicting effects on the cardiovascular system; while it causes bradycardia and vasodilatation by its direct action on the cardiac pacemaker and the vascular smooth muscle, it also induces sympathetic excitation that results in vasoconstriction, tachycardia, and an increase in myocardial contractility." @default.
