- W1028264581 abstract "The role of sensory nerves in the acute inflammatory response was first demonstrated in the conjunctiva of rabbits and the skin of cats and humans. It is now known that sensory nerves mediate a local tissue response, termed ‘neurogenic inflammation’, in several somatic (e.g. skin and joints) and visceral (e.g. airways and urinary bladder) locations [1–3]. Neurogenic inflammation denotes the vasodilatation, increased vascular permeability, and plasma exudation (oedema) that follow sensory nerve stimulation (Fig. 9.1). This response appears to be mediated by local, or axon, reflexes and the peripheral release of neurotransmitter(s) because sensory nerves can mediate the phenomenon without being connected to the central nervous system. Because these nerves can subserve motor (efferent) functions as well as afferent functions, they may be considered to be ‘sensory-efferent’ nerves [4]." @default.
