- W1028984910 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses pediatric trichotillomania (TTM) along with conceptualization and treatment implications. TTM is a chronic impulse control disorder characterized by pulling out one's own hair, resulting in noticeable hair loss. TTM patients find hair pulling pleasurable, satisfying or relieving, even if they feel badly about the negative emotional and physical consequences of pulling. Thus, TTM is thought to be maintained by positive rather than negative reinforcement, which is one of the ways to distinguish it from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). TTM typically emerges during adolescence. Moreover, TTM appears to be a heterogeneous disorder, which serves as a further barrier to comprehensive understanding and thereby hinders the development of treatment strategies. Therapists with different theoretical views would approach the problem from a different vantage point, and the absence of experimental study of pediatric TTM and the resultant dearth of knowledge about this problem does not offer sufficient evidence upon which to dictate an approach. The absence of controlled outcome research clearly demonstrating the efficacy of any particular therapeutic approach further contributes to the confusion about how best to think about and to treat pediatric TTM. More work is needed in these areas in order to help sufferers overcome this difficult and apparently intractable problem." @default.
