- W1030952345 abstract "This chapter discusses genetic events in cancer development. Tumors result from subversion of the processes that control the normal growth, location, and mortality of cells. Proto-oncogenes, the normal products of that are components of signaling pathways that regulate proliferation and which, in their mutated form, become dominant oncogenes. Oncogenes were first directly identified in viruses capable of inducing tumors in animals and/or of transforming cells in vitro . The mechanisms of amplification and chromosome translocation can give rise to elevated cellular concentrations of the normal gene product or to the expression of new proteins created by in-frame fusion of coding sequences from separate genes. An increase in gene copy number by amplification of specific DNA sequences occurs frequently in tumor cells. The exchange of genetic material can occur between homologous or nonhomologous chromosomes and can either be a balanced, reciprocal event or can involve loss of material from one or both junctions. It is found that the over-expression of cyclin D1 is a marker for some forms of lymphoma and its effect is to over-ride normal control of cell cycle progression." @default.
