- W103215004 abstract "With the growing amount of data handled by Internet-enabledmobile devices, the task of preventing software from leakingconfidential information is becoming increasingly important. Atthe same time, mobile applications are typically executed ondifferent devices whose users have varying requirements for theprivacy of their data. Users should be able to define theirpersonal information security settings, and they should get areliable assurance that the installed software respects thesesettings. Language-based information flow security focuses onthe analysis of programs to determine information flows amongaccessed data resources of different security levels, and toverify and formally certify that these flows follow a givenpolicy. In the mobile code scenario, however, both the dynamicaspect of the security environment and the fact that mobilesoftware is distributed as bytecode pose a challenge for existingstatic analysis approaches. This thesis presents alanguage-based mechanism to certify information flow security inthe presence of dynamic environments. An object-orientedhigh-level language as well as a bytecode language are equippedwith facilities to inspect user-defined information flow securitysettings at runtime. This way, the software developer can createprivacy-aware programs that can adapt their behaviour toarbitrary security environments, a property that is formalized asuniversal noninterference. This property is staticallyverified by an information flow type system that uses restrictiveforms of dependent types to judge abstractly on the concretesecurity policy that is effective at runtime. To verify compiledbytecode programs, a low-level version of the type system ispresented that works on an intermediate code representation inwhich the original program structure is partially restored.Rigorous soundness proofs and a type-preserving compilationenable the generation of certified bytecode programs in the styleof proof-carrying code. To show the practical feasibility of theapproach, the system is implemented and demonstrated on aconcrete application scenario, where personal data are sent froma mobile device to a server on the Internet." @default.
